Removal Procedure
- Remove the front tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
- Mark the position of the steering linkage inner tie rod nut and loosen it.
- Remove the steering linkage outer tie rod nut from the steering linkage outer tie rod (2) and discard it.
- Use puller
J 24319-B to separate the steering linkage outer tie rod from the steering knuckle.
- Separate the steering linkage outer tie rod (1) from the steering linkage inner tie rod.
- Inspect the steering linkage inner tie rod for bent or damaged threads. Repair or replace the steering linkage inner tie rod as necessary. Refer to
Steering Linkage Inner Tie Rod Replacement.
- Clean the tapered surface of the steering knuckle.
Installation Procedure
- Lubricate the steering linkage inner tie rod threads with chassis lubricant. Refer to
Fluid and Lubricant Recommendations.
- Install the steering linkage outer tie rod (1) to the steering linkage inner tie rod.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.
- Use installer
J 29193 to seat the steering linkage outer tie rod in the steering knuckle.
Tighten
Tighten installer
J 29193 to 54 N·m (40 lb ft).
- Install the new steering linkage outer tie rod nut to the steering linkage outer tie rod (2).
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 60 N·m (44 lb ft).
- Tighten the steering linkage inner tie rod nut.
Tighten
Tighten the nut to 68 N·m (50 lb ft).
- Adjust the front toe. Refer to
Wheel Alignment - Steering Wheel Angle and/or Front Toe Adjustment.
