    • J 23653-SIR Steering Column Lock Plate Compressor
    • J 42137 Steering Column Lock Plate Compressor Adapter

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Refer to SIR Caution in the Preface section.

  1. Disable the supplemental inflatable restraint (SIR) system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling in SIR.
  2. Important: Let the multifunction turn signal switch/SIR coil assembly hang freely after removal.

  3. Remove the multifunction turn signal switch/SIR coil assembly. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 1492304  Size: SH
  5. Remove the ignition lock cylinder case bolt and discard it.
  6. Remove the ignition lock cylinder case from the steering column.

  7. Object Number: 1650890  Size: SH
  8. Remove and discard the steering shaft lock plate retaining ring using compressor J 23653-SIR and adapter J 42137 .

  9. Object Number: 1492301  Size: SH
  10. Remove the following parts from the steering shaft assembly:
  11. 6.1. Steering column tilt spring retainer
    6.2. Steering shaft upper bearing spring
    6.3. Steering shaft upper bearing race

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1492301  Size: SH
  1. Install the following parts onto the steering shaft assembly:
  2. 1.1. Steering shaft upper bearing race
    1.2. Steering shaft upper bearing spring
    1.3. Steering column tilt spring retainer

    Object Number: 1650890  Size: SH
  3. Install a new steering shaft lock plate retaining ring using J 38364 and J 42137 .
  4. Firmly seat the new steering shaft lock plate retaining ring into the groove on the steering shaft.

  5. Install the ignition lock cylinder case.

  6. Object Number: 1492304  Size: SH
  7. Install a new ignition lock cylinder case bolt.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten until the bolt head shears off .

  9. Install the multifunction turn signal switch/SIR coil assembly. Refer to Turn Signal Multifunction Switch Replacement .
  10. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling.
