Odometer Inoperative or Reads Inaccurate After Replacing the IPC or BCM - keywords calibration cluster inoperative instrument program

Subject:Odometer Inoperative or Reads Inaccurate After Replacing the IPC or BCM

Models:2006 Hummer H3

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.

Condition/Concern:

Odometer reads inaccurate or is inoperative after replacing the IPC or BCM. When replacing the IPC or BCM, there are specific programming instructions to be followed so the correct odometer reading will be displayed and the odometer will be operational. Failure to follow the directions below will result in and inoperative odometer or odometer reading concerns that may not have a way to be corrected.

Recommendation/Instructions:

When replacing the BCM, it is important that SI Document ID # 1552125 is followed and the modules are programmed in the order listed below.

  1. Programming the BCM (Must Be Programmed 1st.) Perform "Request BCM Info. For SPS", then follow the instructions on the screen.
  2. Learning the restraints ID (Must Be Programmed 2nd.)
  3. Important:  The SDM part number and Serial number must be learned to the BCM. This will occur in 2 different areas on the Tech 2. It is important to setup both the SDM serial number and SDM part number in the order listed below. If step "B" setup SDM Part Number in the BCM, is not performed second a SIR lamp will be illuminated on the IP and a B1001 will be set on the SDM. Perform step A first then step B second.

Follow the Tech 2 path listed below to setup the SDM serial number and part number.

2.1. Vehicle Controls Systems/Computer Integrating Systems/UpLevel Radio/Module Setup/Body Control Module/Set up SDM Serial Number in the BCM.
2.2. Vehicle Controls Systems/Computer Integrating Systems/UpLevel Radio/Module Setup/Supplemental Inflatable Restraint/Set up SDM Part Number in the BCM.
  4. Programming Theft Deterrent System Components (Must Be Programmed 3rd.)
  5. Program Key Fobs (Must Be Programmed 4th, if equipped.)

When replacing the IPC, the odometer value is stored in the original IPC and BCM. Once the IPC is replaced, cycle the ignition to the on position and the correct odometer reading will be displayed. If the IPC still reads "0" (zero), the truck will need to be driven for the odometer value to display in the new IPC. The IPC should then display the correct odometer value. DO NOT send this IPC to your exchange center to have the odometer reading entered into the IPC. The exchanges centers do not have the ability to perform this function.

Note: Never substitute a IPC or BCM from any other vehicle into a troubled vehicle as a "know good part". Doing so may result with incorrect odometer readings and oil life monitor value. The vehicle does not have to be driven for this to occur. This could occur with the cycling of the ignition key alone.

Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.
