For 1990-2009 cars only
- Remove the differential side bearings. Refer to Differential Side Bearings Replacement .
- Remove the ring gear. Refer to Drive Pinion and Ring Gear Replacement .
- Remove the differential bearing retainer by performing the following steps:
- Remove the differential bearing race.
- Remove the locking differential coil assembly.
- Remove the differential bearing assembly.
- Remove the locking differential coil plate.
- Remove the outboard locking differential ball bearing plate.
- Remove the locking differential ball bearings.
- Remove the inboard locking differential ball bearing plate.
- Remove the locking differential clutch spring retainer and the differential carrier lock pins.
- Remove the locking differential clutch springs.
- Remove the pinion shaft lock screw.
- Remove the pinion gear shaft.
- Remove the two differential pinion gear thrust washers.
- Remove the two differential pinion gears.
- Remove the differential side gear and the side gear thrust washer.
- Remove the locking differential side gear and thrust washer.
Important: The differential bearing race must be compressed in order to remove the differential bearing retainer.
| 3.1. | With the aid of an assistant, push the differential bearing race down towards the differential case in order to relieve the pressure against the differential bearing retainer. |
| 3.2. | Remove the differential bearing retainer. |
Drive the pinion gear thrust washers out using a brass drift and a hammer.
Rotate the differential side gears in opposite directions in order to remove the differential pinion gears.
Mark the differential pinion gears and the thrust washers top and bottom.
Mark the differential side gears and the thrust washers left and right.
