Attention: Proceed with this bulletin ONLY if the customer has commented about this concern AND the EI number is listed in GMVIS, otherwise disregard the bulletin and proceed with diagnostics found in the published service information. THIS IS NOT A RECALL. Refer to Service Bulletin 04-00-89-053A for more detail on the use of engineering information bulletins.


Condition

Some customers may comment on a crack in the windshield glass.

What Action to Take

GM Engineering is attempting to determine the root cause of the above condition. GM Engineering has a need to obtain information first hand during diagnosis and BEFORE repair. As a result, this information will be used by engineering to "root cause" the customer’s concern and develop/validate a field fix. Please follow the instructions below regarding the requested information.

Instructions

Important: Using a magnifying glass, verify that the crack occurred due to stress in the glass. Inspect for any signs of impact to the windshield. Disregard this bulletin if the crack was not caused by stress.

If a vehicle is encountered with the above concern, complete the following steps; making sure all the information is noted on the Repair Order.

  1. Verify that the VIN and mileage is accurate.
  2. Record the vehicle build date.
  3. Measure the vertical gap between the bottom of the windshield glass and the cowl using narrow feeler gauges following the steps below:
  4. 3.1. Remove the left and right air inlet grille panels. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement in SI.

    3.2. Measure the vertical gap between the bottom of the windshield glass and the cowl on the right side inboard of the right fender bolt (1) with a feeler gauge (2). Record your measurement.

    3.3. Measure the vertical gap between the bottom of the windshield glass and the cowl on the left side inboard of the left fender bolt with a feeler gauge as shown above. Record your measurement.
  5. If possible, photograph the windshield stress crack and E-mail the pictures and information to john.currier@gm.com or fax to 318-683-9011.
  6. Important: Prior to installing the new windshield, ensure that there is clearance in the location being measured or shown. If needed, install a 3 mm (0.12 in) piece of closed cell foam to ensure that there is no contact between the glass and metal.

  7. Replace the front windshield or sublet the repair. Refer to Windshield Replacement in SI.
  8. Install the left and right air inlet grille panels. Refer to Air Inlet Grille Panel Replacement in SI.
