Proper Oil Changing and Oil Spillage Concerns

Based on input from the field, several alternate methods are available to direct oil flow and ease oil spillage concerns on the above vehicles. Oil spillage on frame/suspension components that may capture some oil is an industry wide concern affecting many vehicles. Using a combination of techniques, most vehicles can have the engine oil changed with satisfactory results.

Engine Oil Change Techniques

Some common ways to direct oil flow during an engine oil change include:

    • A 90 degree piece of PVC pipe held immediately against the drain plug outlet during drain plug removal will direct oil flow in an intended direction.
    • A funnel may be used to help direct the engine oil straight down into the drain pan.
    • A flat foil baking pan can be bent or fabricated to direct oil flow from oil plug holes, and filter adapters where vertical space is limited.
    • Using additional absorbent pads, paper or shop towels to absorb stray oil is recommended.

Oil spill to some extent on the underbody components can not always be avoided. In these cases simple clean-up techniques should be employed (i.e. wipe down, power wash or use a 50-state Volatile Organic Chemical (VOC) compliant engine degreaser or equivalent). Customers should be instructed that no matter how many attempts are made to clean the underbody, the potential for a couple drips of engine oil followed by an engine oil change may be expected.
