Removal Procedure

    Important: The left-hand drive model is shown. The right-hand drive model is similar.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  2. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle .
  3. Remove the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  4. Remove the front exhaust pipe. Refer to Front Pipe Replacement .
  5. Remove the transaxle rear mount assembly. Refer to Transmission Rear Mount Replacement .
  6. If the vehicle has AWD, remove the transfer case assembly. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement .
  7. Place drain pan under the vehicle in order to catch the power steering fluid.
  8. Notice: Refer to Power Steering Hose Disconnected Notice in the Preface section.

  9. Remove the fitting (1) and the pressure pipe from the power steering gear inlet.
  10. Remove the fitting (2) and the power steering gear fluid outlet pipe.

  12. Ask an assistant to rotate and hold the steering wheel in order for you to access the intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
  13. Disconnect the connector of the SSPS, if equipped.
  14. Scribe a mark on the stub shaft housing that lines up with a mark on the intermediate shaft lower coupling.
  15. Notice: Refer to Steering Column in Lock Position Notice in the Preface section.

  16. Remove the intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
  17. Ask an assistant to lock the steering column in the straight-ahead position.

  19. Remove the outer tie rod nuts.
  20. Separate the tie rod ends from the steering knuckles.

  22. Remove the left mounting bolt from the steering gear.

  24. Remove the right mounting bolt from the steering gear.
  25. Remove the steering gear from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 1768692  Size: SH

    Important: Ensure the steering column and the steering gear are in the straight-ahead position. Install the steering gear from below the vehicle.

  1. Align the marks on the shafts in order to ensure proper positioning.
  2. Seat the stub shaft into the intermediate shaft.
  3. Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.

  4. Install the left and the right mounting bracket bolts to the steering gear.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the steering gear mounting bracket bolts and nuts to 110 N·m (81 lb ft).

  6. Install the tie rod ends to the steering knuckles.
  7. Install the nuts to the outer tie rod ends.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the outer tie rod end nuts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  9. Ask an assistant to rotate and hold the steering wheel in order for you to access the intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
  10. Install the lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the intermediate shaft pinch bolt to 34 N·m (25 lb ft).

  12. Verify the steering column and the steering gear are in the straight-ahead position.
  13. Notice: Refer to Installing Hoses without Twists or Bends Notice in the Preface section.

  14. Install the pressure pipe and the fitting (1) to the power steering gear fluid inlet.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the pressure pipe fitting to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).

  16. Install the power steering gear fluid outlet pipe and the fitting (2).
  17. Tighten
    Tighten the steering gear outlet pipe fitting to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).

  18. If the vehicle has AWD, install the transfer case assembly. Refer to Transfer Case Assembly Replacement .
  19. Install the transaxle rear mount assembly. Refer to Transmission Rear Mount Replacement .
  20. Install the front exhaust pipe. Refer to Front Pipe Replacement .
  21. Install the front tire and wheel assemblies. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation .
  22. Lower the vehicle.
  23. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection .
  24. Notice: Refer to Using Proper Power Steering Fluid Notice in the Preface section.

  25. Refill the power steering system. Refer to Checking and Adding Power Steering Fluid .
  26. Notice: Refer to Air in the Power Steering System Notice in the Preface section.

  27. Bleed the power steering system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  28. Inspect the power steering system for leaks. If there are leaks, correct the cause of the leaks. Refer to Power Steering Fluid Leaks .
  29. Inspect the position of the steering system. Refer to Straight Ahead Inspection .
