Programming Theft Deterrent System Components Scan 100
The theft deterrent system allows for the use of as many as 4 keys for
each vehicle. Replacement keys must first be programmed to specific vehicle using
the scan tool. This process is completed using serial data communication between the
scan tool and the intelligent switching unit (ISU).
Any vehicle keys not programmed during the programming procedure will be inoperative
after the programming sequence is completed.
Important: You must obtain all of the keys from the
vehicle owner befor programming any of the following components:
• | Engine control module (ECM) |
• | Intelligent switching unit (ISU) |
• | Theft deterrent control module |
Between 2-4 transmitters can be programmed to a vehicle's theft deterrent
system. A minimum of 2 keys are required to perform the procedure.
Any vehicle keys that are not programmed during the programming procedure will
be inoperative after the programming sequence is completed.
Transmitter Programming Procedure
- Acquire the 6-digit security code from the General Motors Technical Assistance
Center. You will need the vehicle identification number and customer information.
- Connect the scan tool to the data link connector (DLC).
- Turn ON the scan tool.
- From the MAIN MENU screen, select DIAGNOSTICS.
- From the MODEL YEAR screen, select the appropriate model year of the specific
vehicle.
- From the VEHICLE TYPE screen, select the specific vehicle model.
- From the SYSTEM SELECTION MENU screen, select BODY.
- From the BODY SELECTION MENU screen, select CODING.
- From the CODING SYSTEM screen, select CODING.
- From the SECRET NUMBER OF CODINGS screen, enter 4 Zeros (0-0-0-0)
in the 4 boxes labeled 1-2-3-4.
- From the CODING SYSTEM SELECT screen, select IMMOBILIZER.
Important: A slight delay may occur and PLEASE WAIT
may be idsplayed before the next screen appears.
- From the FUNCTION SELECTION screen, select KEY CODING.
- From the IMMOBILIZER KEY CODING screen, enter the 6 digit security
code in the 6 boxes labeled 00-00-00.
- Continue programming immobilizer key coding when directed by the scan
tool until all immobilizer key coding has been performed.
Important: A maximum of 4 transponders may be
programmed to a vehicle.
Important: If the transpnder is programmed, the remote
keyless entry is also programmed automatically.
- One all transponders have been programmed, press the ESC button on the keypad.
The display will confirm the number of transponders programmed.
- Turn the scan tool OFF, and then disconnect if from the DLC.

Important: Between 2-4 transmitters can

Important: Do not connect the scan tool to the data
link connector (DLC) before the key is placed in the ignition. If the scan tool is
connected before the ignition is turned ON, then communication errors and the programming
procedure may not complete.
Any vehicles keys not programmed during the programming procedure will be inoperative
after the programming sequence is completed.
Conditions
Use the procedure after replacing the following items:
• | The engine control module (ECM) |
• | The intelligent switching unit (ISU) |
• | The theft deterrent control module |
Immobilizer Programming Procedure
- Acquire the 6-digit security code from the tag provided with the keys
at delivery. If you are unable to locate the tag, a General Motors dealership can
obtain the 6-digit security code through the Part Locator System.
- Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
- Install a scan tool.
- Select IMMOBILIZER PROGRAMMING FUNCTION from the BODY menu.
- Follow the scan tool instructions with each key until all of the keys
are programmed.
- Use the following to enter the 6-digit security code to proceed:
• | The up arrow to enter numbers |
• | The down arrow to enter letters |
• | The left/right arrows to move to the next space |
- Continue following the on-screen instructions with each key until all
of the keys are programmed.
- Cycle the ignition 3 times as indicated by the scan tool.
- Turn the ignition to the LOCK position.
- Disconnect the scan tool.
- Test the operation of all keys.
Important: If any key does not operate properly, make
note of that key.
- If any key does not operate properly, perform this procedure once with all keys.
- If the same inoperative key does not start the vehicle after repeating
the immobilizer programming procedure, replace that key.
- If 2 or more keys do not function after repeating the immobilizer programming
