Starter Replacement Gasoline Engines

Warning: Refer to Battery Disconnect Warning in the Preface section.




1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the air hose inlet hose bolts.



3. Remove the starter solenoid nut to disconnect the electrical cable.
4. Disconnect the starter electrical connector.



5. Remove the starter-to-engine block mounting bolt and the starter-to-transmission mounting bolt.
6. Remove the starter assembly.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.




1. Install the starter-to-engine block mounting bolt and the transmission-to-starter mounting bolt.

•	Tighten the starter-to-engine block mounting bolt to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

•	Tighten the transmission-to-starter mounting bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).




2. Position the starter electrical wire on the solenoid terminals and the ground wire.
3. Install the starter solenoid nut and tighten to 7 N·m (61 lb in).
4. Connect the starter solenoid connector.



5. Install the air inlet hose.
6. Install the air inlet hose bolts and tighten to 6 N·m (53 lb in).
7. Connect the negative battery cable.

Starter Replacement Diesel Engine

Warning: Refer to Battery Disconnect Warning in the Preface section.




1. Disconnect the battery negative cable.
2. Remove the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement.



3. Remove the nuts which secure the battery lead wire and the generator lead wire from the starter solenoid terminals.
4. Remove the starter-to-engine block mounting bolts.
5. Remove the starter assembly.

Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.




1. Install the starter mounting bolts. Tighten the starter-to-engine block mounting bolt to 45 N·m (33.2 lb ft).
2. Install the starter solenoid nut. Tighten the starter solenoid terminal-to-battery lead wire nut to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).



3. Install the engine cover. Refer to Engine Cover Replacement.
4. Connect the negative battery cable.
