    Object Number: 1256492 Size: SH

Warning: When servicing the steering column, the Supplemental Inflatable Restraint (SIR) System clock spring must be centered for proper steering wheel operation. Failure to properly center the SIR clock spring may result in reduced turnability of the steering wheel causing the vehicle to improperly maneuver and may cause the SIR system to be inoperative.

Caution: Do not rotate the steering wheel or move the position of the steering gear once the intermediate shaft is disconnected. This will uncenter the Inflatable Restraint coil in the steering column. If the Inflatable Restraint coil becomes uncentered, it may be damaged during vehicle operation.

  1. Turn the front wheels straight ahead.
  2. Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.

  3. Install the steering wheel module coil with the screws and tighten to 3 N·m (27 lb in).
  4. Center the clockspring. Refer to Inflatable Restraint Steering Wheel Module Coil Centering.
  5. Connect the connectors on the lower steering column.
  6. Install the driver side knee bolster and instrument panel lower cover.
  7. Install the steering wheel.
  8. Enable the SIR system. Refer to SIR Disabling and Enabling.
