Removal Procedure
Note: The left-hand drive model is shown. The right-hand drive model is similar.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle.
- Remove the front tire and wheel assembly closest to the intermediate shaft. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
Caution: Refer to Steering Column in Lock Position Caution in the Preface section.
- Turn the steering wheel to the straight-ahead position.
- Make a mark on the stub shaft housing that lines up with the groove of the intermediate shaft. This mark will be used for proper alignment during installation.
- Remove the lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt from the steering gear.
- Turn the steering wheel in order to access the upper and the lower pinch bolts on the intermediate shaft.
- Remove the upper and the lower pinch bolts from the universal joint on the intermediate shaft.
- Remove the nuts from the dash seal retaining ring.
- Remove the dash seal retaining ring.
- Remove the coupling from the power steering gear and pull the intermediate shaft out of the engine compartment.
Installation Procedure.
- Position the intermediate shaft in the vehicle.
Caution: Refer to Fastener Caution in the Preface section.
- Install the dash seal retaining ring with the nuts and tighten to
7 N·m (62 lb in).
Note: When attaching the upper universal joint, the steering wheel must be in the straight-ahead position.
- Attach the upper universal joint of the intermediate shaft onto the steering column.
- Install the upper pinch bolt to the upper universal joint on the intermediate shaft and tighten to
22 N·m (16 lb ft).
Note: When attaching the lower universal joint, the marks on the intermediate shaft and on the stub shaft should line up.
- Attach the intermediate shaft onto the steering gear stub shaft.
- Install the lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt to the steering gear and tighten to
25 N·m (18 lb ft).
Note: When installing the lower intermediate shaft pinch bolt, ensure the bolt goes through the universal joint on the side of the stub shaft with the notch. If you have trouble seating the universal joint completely down onto the stub
shaft, rotate the steering wheel slightly while pushing down on the universal joint.
- Install the lower pinch bolt to the lower universal joint on the intermediate shaft and tighten to
25 N·m (18 lb ft).
- Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation.
- Lower the vehicle.
