Electrical Information Reference

    •  Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle.
    •  Circuit Testing.

  1. Carry out a Diagnostic System Check.
  2. Start the engine and verify that a noise is audible.
  3. If a noise is audible inspect the drive belt for correct installation and tightness.
  4. Check the alternator for correct mounting and tightness.
  5. Inspect the drive belt tensioner for correct operation.
  6. Caution: Refer to Batteries Produce Explosive Gases Caution in the Preface section.

  7. Ignition OFF.

  9. Connect a loading device (1) to battery posts.
  10. Connect a DMM (3) set on amps between the alternator B+ lead l (2) and the B+ electrical connector (4).
  11. Start engine. Observing scan tool increase engine speed to 1500 RPM.
  12. Observe the engine noise.
  13. Observing the DMM increase alternator load using carbon pile to approximately 50 percent of the alternator output.
  14. If the noise increases with the amount of engine load then replace the alternator.
