Intermediate Steering Shaft Replacement RHD
Removal Procedure
Caution: Refer to Safety Glasses Caution in the Preface section.
Caution: Refer to Vehicle Lifting Caution in the Preface section.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
.
Important: Observing the orientation of the intermediate
steering shaft (1) with reference to the pinion shaft (3) will minimise the potential
of incorrect steering column assembly alignment.
- Mark the intermediate steering shaft (1) in relation to the pinion shaft (3).
- Remove the intermediate steering shaft to pinion shaft retaining bolt
(2).
Important: Bolts with micro-encapsulated thread sealant
must be discarded after removal.
- Disconnect the intermediate shaft (2) from the pinion shaft (3).
Discard the bolt.
- Lower the vehicle.

- Disable the SIR system. Refer to
SIR Disabling and Enabling
.
- Remove the driver side instrument panel lower trim panel assembly. Refer
to
Knee Bolster Replacement
.
- Remove the driver side instrument panel lower right trim plate assembly.

- Remove the driver side instrument panel lower trim panel retainer. Refer
to
Instrument Panel Retainer Replacement
.
- Remove the driver side air outlet duct - floor, RH
Instrument Panel Outer Air Outlet Deflector Replacement - Right Side
.
Important: Observing the orientation of the steering
column shaft (1) with reference to the intermediate steering shaft (3) will minimise
the potential of incorrect steering column assembly alignment.
- Mark the steering column shaft (1) in relation to the intermediate shaft (3).
Important: Bolts with micro-encapsulated thread sealant
must be discarded after removal.
- Remove the steering column shaft to intermediate steering shaft retaining bolt
(2).
Discard the bolt.
- Disconnect the steering column shaft (1) from the intermediate steering
shaft (3).
Important: Pull the intermediate steering shaft grommet
(1) from the cabin side of the mod plate (5) to detach.
- Detach the intermediate steering shaft grommet (1).
- Remove the intermediate shaft (2).
Installation procedure
- Install the intermediate steering shaft
(3).
Important: Push the intermediate shaft grommet (4) from
the cabin side of the mod plate (5).
- Mount the intermediate shaft grommet (4).
Important: The steering column shaft and intermediate
steering shaft splines must be installed in the position recorded during removal and
aligned with the marks previously made.
- Connect the steering column shaft (1) to the intermediate steering shaft (3).
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
- Install the NEW steering column shaft to intermediate steering shaft retaining
bolt (2).
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).
- Install the driver side air outlet duct - floor, RH

- Install the driver side instrument panel lower trim panel retainer. Refer
to

- Install the driver side instrument panel lower right trim plate assembly.

- Install the driver side instrument panel lower trim panel assembly. Refer
to
Knee Bolster Replacement
.
- Enable the SIR system. Refer to
SIR Disabling and Enabling
.
- Raise vehicle.
Important: The intermediate steering shaft and pinion
shaft splines must be installed in the position recorded during removal and aligned
with the marks previously made.
- Connect the intermediate steering shaft (1) to the pinion shaft (3).
- Install NEW the intermediate steering shaft to pinion shaft retaining
bolt (2).
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 28 N·m (21 lb ft).
- Lower the vehicle to the ground.
