GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

The following service procedures require either a programming or a setup event be performed for a complete repair.

ECM Replacement

If the engine control module (ECM) is replaced, the following procedures must be performed:

  1. Idle Learn Procedure--Refer to the appropriate procedure:
  2. •  Idle Learn for the 1.4L DOHC engine
    •  Idle Learn for the 1.6L (L91) engine
    •  Idle Learn for the 1.8L (L79) engine
    •  Idle Learn for the 1.8L (LDA) engine
    •  Idle Learn for the 2.0L (L34 GMDAT) engine
  3. The crankshaft position (CKP) System Variation Learn Procedure--Refer to the appropriate procedure:
  4. •  Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn for the 1.8L (L79) engine
    •  Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn for the 1.8L (LDA) engine
    •  Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn for the 2.0L (L34 GMDAT) engine
  5. Fuel Injection Programming--Refer to Fuel Injector Flow Rate Programming for the 2.0L diesel engine.
  6. DPF Reset Replace ECM--Use a scan tool to reset the DPF system for the 2.0L diesel engine.
  7. Theft Deterrent--Refer to Programming Theft Deterrent System Components. The ECM will learn the incoming fuel continue password immediately upon receipt of a password message. Once a password message is received, and a password is learned, a learn procedure must be performed to change this password again. An ECM which has been previously installed in another vehicle will have learned the other vehicle fuel continue password, and will require a learn procedure after programming to learn the current vehicle password.
  8. Engine Oil Life Remaining--When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was replaced.
  9. Transmission Fluid Life Remaining--When available, use the scan tool to reset the Transmission Fluid Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was replaced.

ECM Reprogramming

If the ECM needs to be reprogrammed, refer to the following procedures:

    •  Service Programming System (SPS).
    •  Programming Theft Deterrent System Components.
    • Engine Oil Life Remaining--When available, use a scan tool to reset the Engine Oil Life Remaining back to the original percentage recorded before the module was reprogrammed.

Setup for Component Replacement

The replacement of some components will require a setup procedure for complete repair.

1.4L, 1.6L, 1.8L, and 2.0L

    • If the throttle body or the ECM is replaced, an Idle Learn Procedure must be performed. Refer to the appropriate procedure:
       -  Idle Learn for the 1.4L DOHC engine
       -  Idle Learn for the 1.6L (L91) engine
       -  Idle Learn for the 1.8L (L79) engine
       -  Idle Learn for the 1.8L (LDA) engine
       -  Idle Learn for the 2.0L (L34 GMDAT) engine
    • If any of the following components are replaced, a CKP Variation Learn Procedure must be performed. Refer to the appropriate procedure:
      • CKP sensor
      • Engine replacement
      • Any engine repair that disturbs the relationship between CKP sensor and the crankshaft reluctor wheel.
   •  Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn for the 1.8L (L79) engine
   •  Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn for the 1.8L (LDA) engine
   •  Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn for the 2.0L (L34 GMDAT) engine

2.0L Diesel

    • If the DPF pressure sensor, the DPF, injectors, or the ECM is replaced, you must reset the DPF system with a scan tool.
    • If an injector is replaced, the following must be performed:
       - The fuel injectors must be programmed. Refer to Fuel Injector Flow Rate Programming.
       - The Pilot Injection values must be reset with a scan tool.
       - The DPF system must be reset with a scan tool.
