Object Detection Description and Operation SWBLHD

Depending on the model variant, the vehicle may be equipped with rear object detection. Rear object detection consists of rear object alarm sensors in the rear bumper, a rear object alarm module and a rear object alarm on the rear parcel shelf.

Object Detection Monitoring

The object alarm sensors fitted to the vehicle are of the ultrasonic type. The object alarm sensors transmit ultrasonic radio waves which are reflected back to the object alarm sensors at different rates depending on the detected objects distance from the object alarm sensors. This change in signal is sent to the rear object alarm module, which in turn activates the rear object alarm.

Rear Object Detection Activation

To activate the object detection system the following criteria must be met:

    • Ignition is ON.
    • Reverse is selected.
    • The handbrake is released.

Important: Once object detection is selected an audible confirmation tone will sound. If a confirmation tone does not sound there may be an object detection malfunction.

Objects Attached to The Vehicle

Note If an attached object is detected, the object detection automatically deactivates completely, approximately 10 seconds after the vehicle’s forward speed exceeds 15 km/h. The object detection will be reactivated automatically when the object is removed or the ignition is switched OFF and then ON again.

Adjustment For a Trailer Hitch

When a trailer hitch is fitted, the object detection can be adjusted to ensure that the trailer hitch is not detected as an object. This is achieved by adjusting the object detection sensor parameters for the extra length.

Important: This adjustment is for manufacturer approved trailer hitches. If a different trailer hitch is fitted, the system may detect it as an attached object and will be deactivated.

Enter the Customisation menu in the infotainment unit and select Tow Bar Att , Select Yes if a tow ball tongue/neck is attached or No if a tow ball tongue/neck is removed.

Depending on the model variant, the vehicle is equipped with one of the following systems:

    • Rear object detection: The rear object detection consists of rear object alarm sensors in the rear bumper, a rear object alarm module and a rear object alarm on the rear parcel shelf.
    • Front and rear object detection: This system is able to detect and to indicate obstacles in front and at the rear of the vehicle. The front and rear object detection consists of sensors in the front and the rear bumpers, a front and rear object alarm module and a front and rear object alarm on the rear parcel shelf. The front and rear object alarm module communicates with the infotainment unit via the GMLAN.

On high features vehicles it also sends a signal to the infotainment unit via the GMLAN. The infotainment unit not only provides an audible warning, but also a graphic display.

Rear Object Detection Activation

To activate the object detection system the following criteria must be met:

    • The LED in the object detection enable/disable switch will only illuminate if the system is active.
    • Ignition is ON.
    • Reverse gear is selected.
    • The handbrake is released.

Important: Once object detection is selected an audible confirmation tone will sound. If a confirmation tone does not sound there may be an object detection malfunction.

Front and Rear Object Detection Activation

    • The LED in the object detection enable/disable switch will only illuminate if the system is active.
    • If a forward gear is selected, only the front sensors are activated and the confirmation tone will sound from the front speaker.
    • If a reverse gear is selected, a short single tone will sound from the rear speaker to confirm that both the rear and the front sensors are operational.
    • The front and rear object detection automatically deactivates, when the vehicle’s forward speed exceeds 25 km/h.
    • When the object detection enable/disable switch is pushed the LED in the object detection enable/disable switch will flash rapidly if a fault is present.
    • Front and rear object detection will not activate if the hand brake is ON, reverse gear is not selected or the vehicle’s forward speed exceeds 25 km/h.
    • On vehicles with front and rear object detection, when reverse gear is selected and the rear and the front sensors simultaneously detect any objects, only the closest object will be indicated. If two objects of the same distance are detected, the object at the rear will be given priority
    • If equipped an animation of the object detection is shown on the infotainment screen when the sensors are activated. The detection range of the front and rear object detection will be illustrated. If an object enters the range of the sensors, the appropriate sector on the display will illuminate green. When the object comes closer, additional sectors will illuminate and the colour of these sectors will change to yellow, then to orange and finally to red.
    • To assist in hearing the warning tones while manoeuvring, the audio system will mute automatically while the object detection is operational.

Objects attached to the vehicle

Note If an attached object is detected, the object detection automatically deactivates completely approximately 10 seconds after the vehicle’s forward speed exceeds 15 km/h. The object detection will be reactivated automatically when the object is removed or the ignition is switched OFF and then ON again.
