Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal Installer
Important:
• | Do not lubricate the oil seal (1) inside diameter (ID) of the crankshaft
surface. |
• | Do not reuse the crankshaft rear oil seal (1). |
- Lubricate the outside diameter (OD) of the oil seal (1)
with clean engine oil.
DO NOT allow oil or other lubricants to contact
the seal surface.
- Lubricate the rear cover (2) oil seal bore with clean engine oil.
DO NOT allow oil or other lubricants to contact the crankshaft surface.
- Install the
J 41479

cone and bolts onto the rear of the crankshaft.
Important: Do not over tighten the bolts.
- Tighten the bolts.
- Install the rear oil seal (1) onto the
J 41479
(3)
and push the seal to the rear cover bore (2).
- Thread the
J 41479
(3) threaded
rod into the tapered cone until the
J 41479
(3)
contacts the rear oil seal (1).
- Align the rear oil seal (1) onto the
J 41479
(3).
- Rotate the handle of the
J 41479
(3)
clockwise until the rear oil seal (1) enters and bottoms into the rear cover
bore (2).
- Remove the
J 41479
(3).

Important: For proper orientation, note the installation direction of the oil seal. The oil seal is a reverse-lip design. The part number is applied to the outside face of the seal, as shown.
- Inspect the seal and identify the part number markings for proper orientation.
- Install the
J 41479
or the
J 41479-2A
cone (2) and bolts onto the rear of the crankshaft. The
J 41479-2A
may be required for manual transmission or 5.3L LS4 applications.
- Tighten the bolts until snug. Do not overtighten.
- Install the rear oil seal onto the tapered cone (2) and push the seal to the rear seal bore. Install the oil seal with the part number markings facing away from the engine.
- Thread the
J 41479
threaded rod into the tapered cone until the tool (1) contacts the oil seal.
- Align the oil seal onto the tool (1).
- Rotate the handle of the tool (1) clockwise until the seal enters the rear housing and bottoms into the seal bore.
- Remove the tool.
