Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement Short Wheel Base

Tools Required

J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

Removal Procedure

  1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Remove the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  3. Remove the idler pulley. Refer to Drive Belt Idler Pulley Replacement in Engine Mechanical-4.2L.
  4. Disconnect the compressor electrical connectors.
  5. Important: Some system pressure may still exist in the A/C compressor crankcase after you evacuate the system.

  6. Remove the compressor hose assembly bolt from the compressor.
  7. Remove the compressor hose assembly block from the compressor.

  8. Object Number: 735963  Size: SH
  9. Remove the compressor mounting bolts from the compressor (1).
  10. Remove the compressor .
  11. Drain and measure the compressor oil. Refer to Compressor Oil Balancing .

Installation Procedure

  1. Adjust the proper amount of oil to the replacement compressor. Refer to Refrigerant System Capacities .
  2. Install the compressor.

  3. Object Number: 735963  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the compressor mounting bolts to the compressor (1).
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  6. Install the compressor hose assembly block to the compressor.
  7. Install the compressor hose assembly bolt to the compressor (1).

    Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  8. Connect the compressor electrical connectors.
  9. Install the idler pulley. Refer to Drive Belt Idler Pulley Replacement in Engine Mechanical.
  10. Install the generator. Refer to Generator Replacement in Engine Electrical.
  11. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  12. Leak test the fittings of the components using the J 39400-A .

Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement Long Wheel Base

Tools Required

J 39400-A Halogen Leak Detector

Removal Procedure

  1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling in Engine Cooling.
  3. Remove the cooling fan and shroud. Refer to Cooling Fan and Shroud Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  4. Remove the engine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory in Engine Mechanical 4.8L, 5.3L and 6.0L.
  5. Release the tension on the air conditioning drive belt.
  6. Reposition the air conditioning drive belt from the compressor pulley.
  7. Remove the compressor hose assembly. Refer to Compressor Hose Assembly Replacement .
  8. Remove the lower coolant hose. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  9. Object Number: 871561  Size: SH
  10. Remove the upper A/C compressor mounting bracket bolts (4).
  11. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  12. Remove the lower A/C compressor mounting bracket bolts (3).
  13. Remove the upper A/C compressor mounting bolts.
  14. Remove the lower A/C compressor mounting bracket bolts. The accessory drive belt tensioner will be removed with one of the bolts.
  15. Remove the last A/C compressor mounting bolt with the compressor removed from the engine.
  16. Remove the electrical connection from the compressor.
  17. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  18. Remove the A/C compressor from the bracket.
  19. Remove the compressor.
  20. If replacing the A/C compressor. Refer to Compressor Oil Balancing .

Installation Procedure

  1. Adjust the proper amount of PAG oil to the compressor crankcase. Refer to Refrigerant System Capacities .
  2. Install the A/C compressor.
  3. Install the A/C compressor to the bracket.

  4. Object Number: 871561  Size: SH
  5. Align the bracket with the long bolts before tightening the compressor (2) to the bracket (1).
  6. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.   7. Install the upper rear compressor mounting bolt.
  8. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  9. Install the accessory drive belt tensioner to the compressor mounting bracket
  10. Install the bolts to the accessory drive belt tensioner.
  11. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  12. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  13. Install the A/C compressor mounting bolts (3).
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  15. Connect the electrical connector to the A/C compressor.
  16. Lower the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  17. Install the upper A/C compressor mounting bracket bolts (4).
  18. Tighten
    Tighten the bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  19. Install the compressor hose assembly. Refer to Compressor Hose Assembly Replacement .
  20. Install the lower coolant hose. Refer to Radiator Inlet Hose Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  21. Install the A/C drive belt. Refer to Air Conditioning Compressor Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L.
  22. Install the engine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement - Accessory in Engine Mechanical - 4.8L, 5.3L, and 6.0L.
  23. Install the fan and shroud. Refer to Cooling Fan and Shroud Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  24. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling In Engine Cooling.
  25. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  26. Leak test the fittings of the component using the J 39400-A .
