  1. Start the engine.
  2. Observe the transmission fluid temperature gage.

Does the transmission fluid temperature gage display that the fluid temperature is within the normal operating range?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the transmission fluid temperature gage.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Connect a test lamp between the ignition 1 voltage circuit of the transmission fluid temperature gage and a good ground.

Does the test light illuminate?

Connect a test lamp between the ignition 1 voltage circuit of the transmission fluid temperature gage and the ground circuit of the transmission fluid temperature gage.

Does the test light illuminate?

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Connect the transmission fluid temperature gage.
  3. Disconnect the automatic transmission fluid temperature sensor.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Does the transmission fluid temperature gage display at or below the specified value?

40°C (104°F)

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Connect a 3-ampere fused jumper between the signal circuit and the ground circuit of the automatic transmission fluid temperature gage sensor.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Does the transmission fluid temperature gage display at or above the specified value?

120°C (248°F)

Test the signal circuit of the automatic transmission fluid temperature sensor for a short to ground. Refer to Circuit Testing and to Wiring Repairs .

Test the signal circuit of the automatic transmission fluid temperature sensor for an open, for a short to voltage, or for a high resistance. Refer to Circuit Testing and to Wiring Repairs .
