Did you perform the Diagnostic System Check - Vehicle?

  1. Block the wheels and set the parking brake.
  2. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  3. Place the gear selector in and out of the reverse position.

Do the backup lamps operate properly?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections

Go to Step 3

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Disconnect the backup lamp switch or the neutral start backup switch.
  3. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  4. Probe the ignition positive voltage circuit of the appropriate switch connector with a test lamp that is connected to ground.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 4

Connect a 15-amp fused jumper wire between the ignition positive voltage circuit of the backup lamp switch or the neutral start backup switch and the backup lamp supply voltage circuit of the backup lamp switch or the neutral start backup switch.

Do both of the backup lamps illuminate?

Go to Step 8

  1. Turn OFF the ignition.
  2. Remove the inoperative backup lamp bulb.
  3. Connect a test lamp between the backup lamp supply voltage circuit and the backup lamp ground circuit.
  4. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.

Does the test lamp illuminate?

Go to Step 7

Test the backup lamp supply voltage circuit for a high resistance or an open. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 13

Inspect for poor connections at the backup lamp bulb. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs .

Inspect for poor connections at the harness connector of the appropriate switch. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Connector Repairs .

Did you find and correct the condition?

Go to Step 13

Repair the following in the ignition positive voltage circuit of the appropriate switch:

    • An open
    • A high resistance
    • A short to ground

Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 13

Repair the open circuit in the backup lamp ground circuit. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs .

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 13

Replace the backup lamp switch. Refer to Backup Lamp Switch Replacement or Park/Neutral Position and Backup Lamp Switch Replacement .

Did you complete the replacement?

Go to Step 13

Replace the backup lamp bulb.

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
