Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the transmission oil. Refer to Lubrication Specifications .
  2. Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to the proper procedure:
  3. •  One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
    •  Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
    •  Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
  4. Remove the parking brake from the transmission, if necessary. Refer to Park Brake Cable Replacement .
  5. Remove the speed sensor harness, as required.

  6. Object Number: 199874  Size: SH
  7. Remove the yoke nut, if necessary.
  8. Remove the companion flange or yoke, as required.

  9. Object Number: 199857  Size: SH
  10. Remove the screws (4), the nuts (1), and the washers (5), if used, from the rear bearing cover.
  11. Remove the rear bearing cover and gasket.
  12. Remove the oil seal.
  13. Clean the gasket material from the gasket surfaces.
  14. Clean the rear bearing cover with clean solvent.
  15. Inspect the gasket surface for scratches and nicks.
  16. Inspect the seal surface for the following conditions:
  17. • Scratches
    • Rust
    • General wear
  18. Inspect the bearing retainer for damage.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 199852  Size: SH

    Important: 

       • The seal lip must face toward the transmission.
       • The seal must not be cocked or distorted.

  1. Install a new seal using a suitable tool. Coat the seal lip with transmission oil.

  2. Object Number: 199857  Size: SH
  3. Install a new gasket and bearing cover (2). Align the oil passages in the rear bearing cover and the transmission case.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the screws (4) or nuts (1) to the rear bearing cover.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the screws or nuts to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  7. Install the companion flange or yoke.

  9. Install the flange or yoke nut.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the flange or yoke nut to 441 N·m (325 lb ft).

  11. Install the speed sensor harness.
  12. Install the parking brake to the transmission. Refer to Park Brake Cable Replacement .
  13. Install the propeller shaft. Refer to the proper procedure:
  14. •  One-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
    •  Two-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
    •  Three-Piece Propeller Shaft Replacement
  15. Fill the transmission with transmission oil. Refer to Lubrication Specifications .
