In order to improve the quality of the 4HE1 and 4BD2T remanufactured engines, a new process is being implemented to assist dealers whenever an SRC remanufactured longblock engine is thought to require replacement under warranty. ONLY 4HE1 AND 4BD2T REMANUFACTURED ENGINES UNDER WARRANTY ARE AFFECTED BY THIS BULLETIN. This process is effective with repair orders written on or after March 1, 2003.
The primary purpose of this new process is to obtain faster and more accurate quality information on all failed remanufactured engines. The secondary reason is to reduce the number of engines replaced when on-vehicle repairs are available. The collected information will be used to improve the reliability of these engines.
A remanufactured longblock engine can be identified by the SRC serial number tag. Refer to the SRC Serial Number Tag Identification section below to locate the SRC serial/part number.
Prior to any repairs to the remanufactured engine, dealers are directed to call the Reman Engine Coordinator in the Medium Duty Technical Assistance Center at 1-800-MEDIUM D (1-800-633-4863), Prompt 3, select Option 3, select option 1. You will then be asked a series of questions to assist in the identification of the engine and to determine the cause of the failure. You will be assigned a Technical Assistance Case # during this call. Please be prepared to provide the information requested in the table below when calling into the Technical Assistance Line.
If the engine is found to be repairable, the proper repair instructions will be provided. If the engine needs to be replaced, authorization to do so will be provided.
When the repair or replacement has been authorized, you will need to process your warranty claims as normal. PLEASE INSERT THE TAC CASE # IN THE WARRANTY CLAIM COMMENT FIELD. WARRANTY CLAIMS WILL NOT BE APPROVED WITHOUT A TAC CASE # FROM THE TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE LINE.
Whenever a remanufactured engine is replaced, it will be necessary to retain the failed engine core. Regardless of the condition of the core, the core must be returned. A representative from AIPDN will contact you within a week and arrange to have the engine core picked up and shipped to SRC. If you do not hear from AIPDN within a week, or if you have questions, please contact the Reman Engine Coordinator at (562) 229-7210. AIPDN will pay the freight charges and the AIPDN representative will provide you with specific shipping instructions. Automatic core credit will be provided as soon as the core is received at SRC.
As in normal warranty core returns, the core tag must be completed and a legible copy of the repair order must accompany the core. Cores must be returned within 30 days of the warranty claim payment. Please label these cores as "Warranty Returns." Please note that this process is a change from your normal core return process to Rexis and affects ONLY remanufactured engine returns.
The following information identifies the locations of the SRC Serial Numbers and Part Numbers for the 4HE1 and 4BD2 Remanufactured Engines. This tag is the only way to identify an SRC Remanufactured Engine.
Each Serial Number begins with one letter followed by a nine digit number (for example; A022402168). Use the following information to locate each tag based on the engine model.
The SRC 4BD2 Remanufactured Engine Serial Number and Part Number are stamped on a metal tag. This tag is located on the passenger side of the engine, towards the rear of the block, directly above the oil filter adapter mounting.
The SRC 4HE1 Remanufactured Engine Serial Number and Part number are stamped on a metal tag. This tag is located on the passenger side of the engine, towards the front, directly below the "ISUZU" cast lettering on the side of the block.
Be aware that in some instances this metal tag may be covered with masking tape or painted over due to the engine painting process. Any masking tape or paint must be removed to reveal the Serial Number and Part Number.
