Some customers may comment on a power steering (PS) pump whine during engine start up in cold ambient temperatures. Once the engine warms up, the noise should diminish.
The PS pump cavitates due to the length of the suction line and the heavy viscosity of the fluid in cold ambient temperatures.
The PS pump reservoir is currently mounted on the left rear corner of the cab. The pump is mounted on the right side of the engine. This mounting arrangement results in a suction line being too long. Relocate the PS pump reservoir to the right side of the vehicle using the procedure and parts listed below.
3.1. | Disconnect the inlet pipe from the reservoir. |
3.2. | Disconnect the quick release outlet hose from the reservoir using J 42971. |
3.3. | Remove the reservoir and mounting bracket from the cab support. Retain the bolts and washers for later use. |
4.1. | Remove the left mud flap. |
4.2. | Remove the ground strap between the transmission and the frame. |
4.3. | Remove the front exhaust pipe. |
4.4. | Disconnect the assembly quick release inlet hose from the steering gear pipe at the side member bracket using J 42971. |
4.5. | Disconnect the assembly outlet pipe from the steering gear pipe at the side member bracket. |
4.6. | Remove the bolt, the nut and the washers from the clip securing the pipe to the LH side member. Retain the fasteners for later use. |
4.7. | Disconnect the assembly inlet and outlet quick release hoses from the pump using J 42971. |
Important: Do not discard the pipe bracket bolts and washers. These will be re-used for the new inlet and outlet pipe assembly. |
4.8. | Remove the bolts and washers from the pipe brackets at the RH and LH sidemembers. |
4.9. | From under the vehicle, remove the bolts and washers from the pipe brackets at the crossmember. |
4.10. | Remove the inlet and outlet pipe assembly from the vehicle. |
