Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 1859-A Universal Steering Wheel Puller

    Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  3. Remove the horn pad (1).

  4. Object Number: 228496  Size: MH
  5. Remove the steering wheel nut (2) and the washer.
  6. Disconnect the horn electrical connector.

  7. Object Number: 228500  Size: SH
  8. Mark the position of the steering wheel in relation to the steering column shaft for installation.

  9. Object Number: 215719  Size: SH
  10. Use the J 1859-A in order to remove the steering wheel from the steering column shaft.

Installation Procedure

  1. Apply a thin coat of lithium grease to the bottom of the horn contact ring (1).

  2. Object Number: 228500  Size: SH
  3. Install the steering wheel on the steering shaft.
  4. Be sure to align the marks.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Install the washer and the steering wheel nut (2).
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the steering wheel nut to 55 N·m (41 lb ft).

  7. Connect the horn electrical connector.

  10. Connect the negative battery cable.
