Draining Procedure

Caution: To avoid being burned, do not remove coolant recovery reservoir cap while engine is at normal operating temperature. The cooling system will release scalding fluid and steam under pressure if radiator filler cap is removed while engine and radiator are still hot.

  1. Tilt the cab. Refer to Cab Tilting in General Information.

  2. Object Number: 574829 Size: SH
  3. Place a drain pan under the radiator drain cock. Ensure that the capacity of the drain pan is at least 30 L (32 qt).
  4. Verify that the system is cool.
  5. Remove the coolant reservoir cap.
  6. Open the drain cock at the bottom of the radiator.
  7. Allow the cooling system to drain until the coolant flow stops.
  8. Open the cylinder block drain plugs.
  9. Allow the engine block to drain until the coolant flow stops.
  10. Disconnect the coolant hose from the air compressor.

Filling Procedure

Important: Do not use more than 70 percent antifreeze coolant solution or the coolant freeze point will rise. The coolant will not be as effective if the freeze point rises.

Do not overfill the radiator. Overfill may cause coolant loss.

  1. Close the engine block drain plugs.

  2. Object Number: 574829 Size: SH
  3. Close the radiator drain cock.
  4. Important: Use Caterpillar® Heavy-Duty Long life coolant for Caterpillar® diesel engines.

  5. Fill the cooling system with coolant solution.
  6. • In vehicles that are equipped with a recovery reservoir, fill the reservoir to the HOT LEVEL if the engine is at the normal operating temperature.
    • On vehicles that are equipped with a surge tank, fill the surge tank to the cold engine level.
  7. Run the engine and open the bleed valve in order to remove the air in the system.
  8. Inspect the coolant level. The system should hold approximately 30 L (32 qt).
  9. Close the bleed valve and verify that the following conditions exist before removing the coolant reservoir or surge tank cap:

    • The coolant is sufficiently cool.
    • The pressure is off the system.
  10. Reinstall the coolant cap.
  11. Lower the cab. Refer to Cab Tilting in General Information.
