Removal Procedure
- Drain the transmission oil. Refer to
Lubrication Specifications
.
- Remove the propeller shaft. Refer to the proper procedure:
- Remove the parking brake from the transmission, if necessary.
Refer to
Park Brake Cable Replacement
in Park Brake.
- Remove the speed sensor harness, as required.
- Remove the yoke nut, if
necessary.
- Remove the companion flange or yoke, as required.
- Remove the screws (4),
the nuts (1), and the washers (5), if used, from the rear bearing
cover.
- Remove the rear bearing cover and gasket.
- Remove the mainshaft rear bearing oil
seal from the transmission extension using a hammer and a punch.
- Clean the gasket material from the gasket surfaces.
- Clean the rear bearing cover with clean solvent.
- Inspect the gasket surface for scratches and nicks.
- Inspect the seal surface for the following conditions:
- Inspect the bearing retainer for damage.
Installation Procedure
- Install the mainshaft rear bearing oil
seal using and in the transmission extension. The open side of the seal
goes toward the tool.
- Install a new gasket and
bearing cover (2). Align the oil passages in the rear bearing cover and the
transmission case.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the screws (4) or nuts (1) to the rear bearing cover.
Tighten
Tighten the screws or nuts to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).
- Install the companion flange or yoke.
- Install the flange or
yoke nut.
Tighten
Tighten the flange or yoke nut to 441 N·m (325 lb ft).
- Install the speed sensor harness.
- Install the parking brake to the transmission. Refer to
Park Brake Cable Replacement
in Park Brake.
- Install the propeller shaft. Refer to the proper procedure:
- Fill the transmission with transmission oil. Refer to
Lubrication Specifications
