Did you review the backup lamps operation and perform the necessary inspections?

Go to Step 2

Go to Symptoms - Lighting Systems

1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
2. Apply the parking brake.
3. Place the transmission in PARK or NEUTRAL.

Are the backup lamps OFF?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

Go to Step 3

Disconnect the backup lamp switch.

Are the backup lamps illuminated?

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 5

Repair a short to voltage in the voltage supply circuit of the backup lamps. Refer to Circuit Testing and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Did you complete the repair?

Go to Step 6

Replace the backup lamp switch. Refer to Backup Lamp Switch Replacement in Manual Transmissions or Park/Neutral Backup Switch Replacement in Automatic Transmissions.

Did you complete the replacement?

Go to Step 6

Operate the system in order to verify the repair.
