Attention: This Service Bulletin is intended for use by professional, qualified technicians. Attempting repairs or service without the appropriate training, tools, and equipment could cause injury to you or others and damage to your vehicle that may cause it not to operate properly.

Service Information

1996-1997 NPR EFI models are equipped with fuel, emissions, and ignition systems that are OBD II compliant. The Pro-Link 9000 scan tool currently in use is not configured to extract diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) on these vehicles. Basic DTCs, however, can be extracted using any of the commonly available diagnostic scan tools (e.g., Tech-1, Snap On, OTC, etc.) that are OBD II compliant.

Tech 1 Loan Program

As a temporary measure, should you, the dealer, require assistance in extracting codes, the Technical Assistance Line (TAL) has a limited number of Tech-1 scan tools, which will be available for loan under certain circumstances. Dealers requiring a scan tool to perform OBD II diagnostics should contact the TAL at 1-800-533-0244. The TAL will assist in diagnosis and repair. All loaned scan tools must be promptly returned to the TAL, in good working order, once repairs are completed.

Tech 1 Loan Procedure

The following steps outline the proper procedure for ordering and returning the Tech-1 scan tool:

    • Dealer calls Technical Assistance Line (TAL) at 1-800-533-0244 and supplies dealer code, name, VIN, and description of symptom.

Object Number: 1254194 Size: SH
    • TAL prepares one (1) box containing Tech-1 equipment and ships overnight to dealer.
    • Upon receipt of container, dealer inspects contents to ensure receipt of following items:

Important: If any of the following items are missing, contact the TAL immediately.

      • Tech-1 Scan Tool with adapter (Item A).
      • Tech-1 Operator's Manual (Item B).
      • Tech-1/OBD II Application and Reference Guide for 1996 NPR Gas (Item C).
      • FEDEX Form with return address and account number filled in (Item D).
      • Tech-1 black container (Item E).

Important: Be sure to return all the Tech-1 items in good working order to American Isuzu Motors Inc. Failure to do so may result in a monetary debit. The amount of this debit will vary depending upon what item(s) are missing from the returned container. Please include the Repair Order (RO) in the returned container.

    • After diagnosing and repairing vehicle, dealer packs items in original container and calls FEDEX for pickup and delivery to American Isuzu Motors Inc.

Future Direction

As a permanent direction for OBD II diagnosis and reprogramming, American Isuzu Motors Inc. is currently investigating usage of the Tech 2 scan tool along with PC-based support hardware/software. Tentative plans (should current investigation prove worthwhile) are to be implemented in the 1997 or 1998 model year.
