Tools Required
J 36660-A Torque Angle Meter.
- Install the cylinder head gasket to the
block.
Important: Install the cylinder head gasket with the words "THIS SIDE UP"
showing.
- Use a socket to push the cylinder head gasket over the rear dowel pin.
- Carefully guide the cylinder head into
place over the dowel pins. This operation may require an assistant.
- Install the cylinder head bolts by hand.
- Tighten the cylinder head bolts.
Tighten
• | Tighten the long cylinder head bolts to 63 N·m (46 lb ft). |
• | Tighten the short cylinder head bolts to 58 N·m (43 lb ft). |

Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

- Use the following sequence in order to
tighten the cylinder head bolts:
6.1. | Tighten bolt 1 to 63 N·m (46 lb ft). |
6.2. | Tighten bolt 2 to 58 N·m (43 lb ft). |
6.3. | Tighten bolt 3 to 58 N·m (43 lb ft). |
6.4. | Tighten bolt 4 to 63 N·m (46 lb ft). |
6.5. | Tighten bolt 5 to 63 N·m (46 lb ft). |
6.6. | Tighten bolt 6 to 58 N·m (43 lb ft). |
6.7. | Tighten bolt 7 to 58 N·m (43 lb ft). |
6.8. | Tighten bolt 8 to 63 N·m (46 lb ft). |
6.9. | Tighten bolt 9 to 63 N·m (46 lb ft). |
6.10. | Tighten bolt 10 (stud bolt) to 58 N·m (43 lb ft). |

to tighten all the
cylinder head bolts an additional 90 degrees in sequence. |
- Install the engine lift bracket onto the
rear of the engine.
- Install the exhaust manifold. Refer to Exhaust Manifold Installation.
- Install the oxygen sensor.
- Install the oil fill tube. Refer to Engine Oil Fill Tube Installation
- Install the coolant pump. Refer to Water Pump Installation
