Removal Procedure

Notice: If the engine is damaged internally and a new engine assembly is installed in the vehicle, ensure that all foreign material is flushed out of the cooling system. You must also flush out the oil cooler system. Failure to rid the oil cooler system of debris can result in engine damage.

Tools Required

J 41427 Universal Lift Bracket

  1. Raise the vehicle.
  2. Disconnect the exhaust pipe from the exhaust manifolds. Refer to Engine Exhaust.
  3. Disconnect the slave cylinder or hydraulic line if the cylinder is mounted inside the bellhousing. Refer to Clutch Concentric Actuator Cylinder Replacement .
  4. Disconnect the fuel line clamp at the bellhousing.
  5. Remove the starter. Refer to Engine Electrical.
  6. Disconnect the torque converter bolts from the flywheel. Refer to Transmission Replacement .
  7. Remove the oil filter.
  8. Remove the transmission to engine bolts.
  9. • Remove all the transmission to engine bolts except for the upper left bolt.
    • For an automatic transmission refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission.
    • For a manual transmission refer to Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission.

  10. Remove the front engine mount through bolts.

  11. Object Number: 4569  Size: SH
  12. Remove the rear engine mount crossmember nut and washer.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Remove the battery ground cable at the engine. Refer to Engine Electrical.
  15. Remove the air conditioning compressor and bracket. Refer to Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning.
  16. Remove the radiator. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  17. Disconnect the power steering hoses from the power steering gear and cap them. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  18. Disconnect the heater hoses from the engine. Refer to Heater and Ventilation.
  19. Disconnect the following items:
  20. • The wiring harnesses
    • The vacuum hoses
    • The throttle cable
    • The fuel pipes

  21. Remove the distributor. Refer to Engine Electrical.
  22. Support the transmission with a suitable jack and a block of wood, then remove the final transmission to engine bolt.

  23. Object Number: 33636  Size: SH
  24. Install J 41427 to the right rear and the left front of the intake manifold.
  25. Tighten
    J 41427 bolts to 15 N·m (11 lb. ft.)

  26. Use an approved engine lifting device and remove the engine from the vehicle.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

J 41427 Universal Lift Bracket

  1. Install the engine into the vehicle.
  2. Install the left upper transmission to engine bolt.

  3. Object Number: 4564  Size: SH
  4. Install the front engine mount through bolts and nuts.
  5. Tighten

        • Tighten the bolts to 66 N·m (49 lb ft).
        • Tighten the nuts to 56 N·m (41 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  6. Remove the universal lift brackets and install the intake manifold bolts. Refer to Intake Manifold Replacement .

  7. Object Number: 34403  Size: SH
  8. Install the distributor. Refer to Engine Electrical.
  9. Install the following items:
  10. • The wiring harnesses
    • The vacuum hoses
    • The throttle cable
    • The fuel pipes
  11. Connect the heater hoses to the engine. Refer to Heater and Ventilation.
  12. Install the power steering hoses. Refer to Power Steering Gear and Pump.
  13. Install the radiator. Refer to Cooling and Radiator.
  14. Install the air conditioning compressor and bracket. Refer to Heater and Ventilation.
  15. Raise the vehicle.
  16. Install the battery ground cable at the engine.
  17. Install the remaining transmission to engine bolts.
  18. • For an automatic transmission refer to Transmission Replacement in Automatic Transmission.
    • For a manual transmission refer to Transmission Replacement in Manual Transmission.

  19. Install the rear engine mount crossmember nut and washer.
  20. Tighten
    Tighten the nut to 45 N·m (33 lb ft).

  21. Install the engine oil filter.
  22. Connect the torque converter bolts to the flywheel. Refer to Transmission Replacement .
  23. Install the starter. Refer to Engine Electrical.
  24. Connect the fuel line clamp at the bellhousing.
  25. Connect the slave cylinder or hydraulic line if the cylinder is mounted inside the bellhousing. Refer to Transmission Replacement .
  26. Connect the exhaust pipe to the exhaust manifolds. Refer to Engine Exhaust.
  27. Lower the vehicle
  28. Fill the engine with engine oil.
  29. Connect the negative battery cable.
