  1. Drain the oil from the oil pump.

  2. Object Number: 5274  Size: SH
  3. Remove the drive shaft.

  4. Object Number: 5276  Size: SH

    Important: Do not remove the pickup tube from the cover unless the pickup tube is loose or broken.

  5. Remove the oil pump cover bolts.

  6. Object Number: 5277  Size: SH
  7. Remove the oil pump cover.

  8. Object Number: 5278  Size: SH
  9. Remove the oil pump gears.
  10. Caution: In some models, the pressure regulator valve spring is under pressure. Remove the retaining pin carefully in order to avoid bodily injury.

  11. Remove the pressure regulator valve components in the following order:
  12. 6.1. Remove the cotter pin.
    6.2. Remove the spring.

    Caution: Bodily injury may occur if the cleaning solvent is inhaled or exposed to the skin.

    6.3. Remove the pressure regulator valve. If the valve is stuck, soak the pump housing in carburetor cleaning solvent.

J 21882 Oil Suction Tube Installer

  1. Lubricate all internal oil pump parts with engine oil during assembly.

  2. Object Number: 5278  Size: SH
  3. Install the oil pump gears.

  4. Object Number: 5277  Size: SH
  5. Install the oil pump cover.
  6. Install the oil pump cover bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the oil pump cover bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Install the pressure regulator valve.
  9. Install the pressure regulator spring.
  10. Install the cotter pin.
  11. Important: Make sure the cotter pin is properly secured.

  12. Apply sealer GM P/N 1050026 or equivalent to the new suction pipe.
  13. Tap the new suction pipe into place with a plastic hammer. Use the J 21882 .
