Rear Crankshaft Oil Seal and Housing Replacement Housing

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 4078  Size: SH
  1. Remove the flywheel. For the automatic transmission refer to Transmission Replacement .
  2. For the manual transmission refer to Transmission Replacement .
  3. Remove the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .

  4. Object Number: 4071  Size: SH
  5. Remove the oil seal retainer screw and the nuts.

  6. Object Number: 4072  Size: SH
  7. Remove the seal retainer.

  8. Object Number: 4073  Size: SH
  9. Remove the gasket.

  10. Object Number: 31379  Size: SH
  11. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal.
  12. 7.1. Insert a screwdriver into the notches provided in the seal retainer.
    7.2. Pry out the seal.
    7.3. Do not damage the crankshaft sealing surface.
  13. Clean the gasket surfaces on the block and the seal retainer.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 4073  Size: SH

    Important: Whenever the seal retainer is removed, install a new retainer gasket and crankshaft rear oil seal.

  1. Install the gasket to the block. Use an approved sealant to hold the gasket in place.

  2. Object Number: 4072  Size: SH
  3. Install the seal retainer.

  4. Object Number: 4071  Size: SH
  5. Install the oil seal retainer screws and the nuts.
  6. Tighten
    Tighten the screws and the nuts to 15 N·m (11 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  7. Install the oil pan. Refer to Oil Pan Replacement .

  8. Object Number: 4077  Size: SH
  9. Lubricate the inner and outer diameter of the seal with engine oil.
  10. Install the seal on the J 35621-A .

  11. Object Number: 23781  Size: SH
  12. Position the J 35621-A against the crankshaft. Thread the attaching screws into the tapped holes in the crankshaft.
  13. Tighten the screws securely with a screwdriver. This will ensure that the seal is installed squarely over the crankshaft.
  14. Turn the handle until it bottoms out.
  15. Remove the J 35621-A .

  17. Install the flywheel. For the automatic transmission refer to Transmission Replacement .
  18. For the manual transmission refer to Transmission Replacement .

Rear Crankshaft Oil Seal and Housing Replacement Seal

Removal Procedure

  1. Remove the flywheel. For the automatic transmission refer to Transmission Replacement . For the manual transmission refer to Transmission Replacement .

  2. Object Number: 31379  Size: SH
  3. Remove the crankshaft rear oil seal. Refer to Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal and Housing Removal (General) .

  1. Install the crankshaft rear seal. Refer to Crankshaft Rear Oil Seal and Housing Installation .
  2. Install the flywheel. For the automatic transmission refer to Transmission Replacement .
  3. For the manual transmission refer to Transmission Replacement .
