Water Pump Replacement 4.3L

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the coolant from the radiator. Refer to Radiator Replacement .
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  3. Remove the upper fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement .
  4. Remove the cooling fan. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement .
  5. Remove the cooling fan clutch.

  7. Remove the coolant pump drive pulley.
  8. Loosen the radiator outlet hose clamp.
  9. Remove radiator outlet hose from the coolant pump.

  10. Object Number: 42880  Size: SH
  11. Remove the coolant pump attaching bolts.

  12. Object Number: 42882  Size: SH
  13. Remove the coolant pump from the engine.

  14. Object Number: 42884  Size: SH
  15. Remove the coolant pump gaskets.
  16. Be sure all mating surfaces are clean and free of gasket material or burs.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 42884  Size: SH
  1. Install the coolant pump gaskets.

  2. Object Number: 42882  Size: SH
  3. Install the coolant pump to the engine.
  4. Apply sealant to the bolt threads.

  5. Object Number: 42880  Size: SH
  6. Install the coolant pump attaching bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the attaching bolts to 41 N·m (30 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Place the radiator outlet hose clamp loosely on the end of the hose.
  9. Connect the radiator outlet hose to the coolant pump.
  10. Tighten the radiator hose clamp.

  12. Install the coolant pump drive pulley.
  13. Install the fan clutch. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement .
  14. Install the cooling fan.
  15. Install the multiple ribbed accessory drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  16. Install the upper fan shroud. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement .
  17. Fill the radiator with the specified coolant and concentration. Refer to Radiator Replacement .
  18. Check the cooling system for leaks. Refer to Radiator Leak Testing (On and Off Vehicle) .

Water Pump Replacement 2.2L

Removal Procedure

    Caution: Do not remove the radiator cap while the cooling system is hot. Serious personal injury may result. Only remove the radiator cap from a cool engine.

  1. Remove the coolant from the radiator. Refer to Draining and Filling Cooling System .
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement .
  3. Remove upper fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement .
  4. Remove the fan. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement .
  5. Remove the fan clutch assembly.

  7. Remove the coolant pump drive pulley.

  8. Object Number: 3330  Size: SH
  9. Remove the coolant pump attaching nuts and bolts.
  10. Remove the coolant pump.

  11. Object Number: 3329  Size: SH
  12. Remove the coolant pump gasket.
  13. Inspect, to make sure all parts are free of burs or other imperfections, replace as necessary.
  14. Clean all of the mating surfaces.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 3329  Size: SH
  1. Install the coolant pump gasket to the engine.

  2. Object Number: 3330  Size: SH
  3. Install the coolant pump to the engine.
  4. Apply sealant to the bolt threads.

  5. Object Number: 1381  Size: SH
  6. Install the coolant pump attaching bolts.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the coolant pump attaching bolts to 25 N·m (18 lb ft).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure.
