The Engine Does Not Crank (or Cranks Slowly), the Starter Solenoid Clicks

  1. Remove Fuse 10 (ECM IGN) fuse.
  2. Connect a voltmeter J 39200 to the positive and to the negative battery terminals.
  3. Crank the engine for 15 seconds.

Is the voltmeter reading at least the specification?

9.5 V

Go to Step 2

Connect the voltmeter J 39200 from the negative battery terminal to the engine block.

Is the voltage drop the specification or less?

0.5 V

Go to Step 6

Load test the battery, refer to Battery Electrical Drain/Parasitic Load Test .

Is the battery OK?

Go to Step 4

Go to Step 5

Repair the starter motor, refer to Starter Motor Inspection .

Is the starter OK?

--

System OK

Go to Step 5

Repair or replace the parts as necessary.

Is the repair complete?

--

System OK

Connect the voltmeter J 39200 from the positive battery terminal to the starter solenoid terminal at BLK I wire.

Is the voltage drop the specification or less?

0.5 V

Go to Step 4

Install a new negative battery cable, refer to Battery Cable .

Does the engine crank normally now?

Go to step 6

Install a new positive battery cable, refer to Battery Cable .

Does the engine crank normally now?
