Starter Solenoid Does Not Engage

DEFINITION: The Starter Solenoid does not engage when the Ignition Switch is placed in the Start position. No clicking noise is heard. However, the Battery Indicating Light or the MIL do illuminate.

Does the vehicle have an automatic transmission?

  1. Disconnect the PPL (6) wire at the Starter Solenoid.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the Starter's PPL (6) wire and ground.
  3. Check that the automatic transmission is in the Park position.
  4. Place the Ignition Switch in the Start position.
  5. Observe the test lamp.
  6. Place the Ignition Switch in the Off position.

Did the test lamp light?

  1. Disconnect the PPL (6) wire at the Starter Solenoid.
  2. Connect a test lamp between the Starter's PPL (6) wire and ground.
  3. Depress the clutch pedal for vehicles having a manual transmission.
  4. Place the Ignition Switch in the Start position.
  5. Observe the test lamp.
  6. Place the Ignition Switch in the Off position.
  7. Release the clutch pedal.

Did the test lamp light?

Remove the Starter.

    •  For vehicles with 2.2L Engines, refer to the Removal Procedure in Starter Motor Replacement .
    •  For vehicles with 4.3L Engines, refer to the Removal Procedure in Starter Motor Replacement .

Is the starter removed?

  1. Inspect and clean the starter mounting surfaces and hardware as required in order to provide good grounding when the starter is re-installed.
  2. Perform the Starter No-Load Test. Refer to Starter No Load Test .
  3. Disassemble the starter. Refer to Starter Motor Disassemble .
  4. Inspect the Starter. Refer to the Cleaning and Inspection Procedure in Starter Motor Inspection .
  5. Repair or replace the starter as determined by the inspection procedure. If no problem was found in the starter inspection, then reinstall the old starter.
  6. If required, assemble the Starter. Refer to Starter Motor Assemble .

Install the Starter.

    •  For vehicles with 2.2L Engines, refer to the Installation Procedure in Starter Motor Replacement .
    • For vehicles with 4.3L Engines, refer to the Installation Procedure in Starter Motor Replacement .

Is the starter installed?

  1. Remove the Starter Relay.
  2. Connect a self-powered test lamp between the Starter's PPL (6) wire and ground.
  3. Check for an intermittent short to ground. Refer to Troubleshooting Procedures in SECTION 8A-4.

Does the test lamp light?

Locate and repair the short to ground in the PPL (6) wire between the Starter Relay and the Starter. Refer to the Repair Procedures in SECTION 8A-5.

Connect a self-powered test lamp between Starter Relay connector Cavity 87 for the PPL (6) wire and the Starter's end of the PPL (6) wire.

  1. Locate and repair the open in the PPL (6) wire between the Starter Relay and the Starter.
  2. Install the Starter Relay.
  3. Connect the PPL (6) wire at the Starter Solenoid.

  2. Connect a self-powered test lamp between Starter Relay Cavity 30 for the RED (1542) wire and ground.
  3. Check for an intermittent short to ground. Refer to the Troubleshooting Procedures in SECTION 8A-4.

  3. Test for an intermittent short to ground.

  1. Locate and repair the short to ground in the YEL (1737) wire between the Transmission Range Switch (Park/Neutral Position And Backup Lamp Switch) and the Starter Relay.
  2. Install the Starter Relay.
  3. Install CRANK Fuse 20 at the I/P Fuse Block.
  4. Reconnect the Transmission Range Switch (Park/Neutral Position And Backup Lamp Switch).

Are the repairs complete?

  1. Connect a self-powered test lamp between Transmission Range Switch (Park/Neutral Position And Backup Lamp Switch) Pin E and ground.
  2. Observe the test lamp.
  3. Connect a self-powered test lamp between Transmission Range Switch (Park/Neutral Position And Backup Lamp Switch) Pin G and ground.
  4. Observe the test lamp.

Did the test lamp light in either test?

  2. Connect a self powered test lamp between Supplemental Restraint Diagnostic Energy Reserve Module connector Cavity B10 for the PPL (806) wire and ground.
  3. Check for an intermittent short to ground on the PPL (806) wire.

Does the test lamp light?

  1. Install the Starter Relay.
  2. Install CRANK Fuse 20 at the I/P Fuse Block.
  3. Reconnect Connector C1 at the Transmission Range Switch (Park/Neutral Position And Backup Lamp Switch).
  4. Replace the Supplemental Restraint Diagnostic Energy Reserve Module. Refer to Supl Rst Diagnostic Energy Reserve Module in Section 9 -- Restraints.

Are the repairs complete?

  1. Locate and repair the short to ground on the PPL (806) wire between the I/P Fuse Block, the Supplemental Restraint Diagnostic Energy Reserve Module, and the Transmission Range Switch (Park/Neutral Position And Backup Lamp Switch).
  2. Reconnect the connector at the Supplemental Restraint Diagnostic Energy Reserve Module.
  3. Reconnect Connector C1 at the Transmission Range Switch (Park/Neutral Position And Backup Lamp Switch).
  4. Install the Starter Relay.
  5. Replace CRANK Fuse 20 at the I/P Fuse Block.

Are the repairs complete?

  3. Install the Starter Relay.
  4. Install CRANK Fuse 20 at the I/P Fuse Block.

  4. Reconnect the Clutch Pedal Position And Cruise Control Shutoff Switch.

  5. Connect a self-powered test lamp between Clutch Pedal Position And Cruise Control Shutoff Switch Pin C and ground.
