The Battery Indicating Lamp Does Not Illuminate

DEFINITION: The Battery Indicating Lamp does not illuminate with the Ignition Switch in the Run position while the engine is not operating.

  1. Disconnect the connector at the Generator.
  2. Connect a voltmeter between Generator connector Cavity B for the BRN (25) wire and engine ground.
  3. Place the Ignition Switch in the Run position.
  4. Observe the indicated voltage.
  5. Observe if the BRAKE indicating lamp illuminates on the Instrument Cluster.
  6. Observe if the Voltmeter on the Instrument Cluster indicates voltage.
  7. Place the Ignition Switch in the Off position.
  8. Remove the voltmeter from the generator connector.

Was battery voltage observed at the Generator connector?

12 Volts, nominally

  1. Reconnect the connector at the generator.
  2. Remove the Instrument Cluster. Refer to the Remove or Disconnect procedure in Instrument Cluster Replacement in SECTION 8C4.
  3. Remove the Battery Indicating Lamp bulb.
  4. Observe or test the bulb filament for continuity.

Is the Battery Indicating Lamp bulb filament continuous?

  1. Replace the Battery Indicating Lamp bulb.
  2. Install the Instrument Cluster.

Did the BRAKE Indicating Lamp illuminate when the Ignition Switch was in the Run position?

  1. Connect an ohmmeter between Instrument Cluster Pins 28 and 4.
  2. Measure the resistance between Instrument Cluster Pins 28 and 4.
  3. Using a fused jumper wire or equivalent, momentarily connect the terminals in the socket for the Battery Indicating Lamp.
  4. Observe the resistance indicated on the ohmmeter as the socket terminals are shorted.
  5. Remove the jumper wire.
  6. Remove the ohmmeter.

Does the indicated resistance drop well below 510 ohms when the socket is shorted?

510 ohms

Replace the Instrument Cluster. Refer to the Install or Connect procedure in Instrument Cluster Replacement in SECTION 8C-4.

Are the repairs complete?

Connect a self-powered test lamp between Instrument Cluster connector Cavity 4 for the BRN (25) wire and engine ground.

Did the test lamp light?

Go to Step 11

Locate and repair the short to ground in the BRN (25) wire between the Instrument Cluster and the Generator.

Are the repairs complete?

Locate and repair the open in the BRN (25) wire between the Instrument Cluster and the Generator.

Does the Voltmeter on the Instrument Cluster display battery voltage when the Ignition Switch is in the Run position?

  1. Remove GAUGES Fuse 4 from the I/P Fuse Block.
  2. Disconnect the Instrument Cluster. Refer to the Remove or Disconnect procedure in Instrument Cluster Replacement in SECTION 8C-4.
  3. Connect a self-powered test lamp between I/P Fuse Block cavity J7 for the GAUGES fuse and Instrument Cluster connector Cavity 28 for the PNK (39) wire.

Does the test lamp light?

  1. Remove the test lamp.
  2. Locate and repair the open in the PNK (39) wire between Splice S213 and the Instrument Cluster.
  3. Connect the Instrument Cluster. Refer to the Install or Connect procedure in Instrument Cluster Replacement in SECTION 8C-4.
  4. Install GAUGES Fuse 4 at the I/P Fuse Block.

  1. Remove the test lamp.
  2. Replace the Instrument Cluster. Refer to the Install or Connect procedure in Instrument Cluster Replacement in SECTION 8C-4.
  3. Install GAUGES Fuse 4 at the I/P Fuse Block.

Are the repairs complete?

Remove the GAUGES Fuse 4 from the I/P Fuse Block.

Is the GAUGES Fuse 4 open?

--

Go to Step 18

  1. Locate and repair the short to ground on the PNK (39) wire from GAUGES Fuse 4.
  2. Replace and install GAUGES Fuse 4.

Is the repair complete?

Go to Engine Electrical Diagnostic System Check .

  1. Locate and repair the open circuit in the PNK (39) wire between the I/P Fuse Block and Splice S213.
  2. Install the GAUGES Fuse 4.
