Battery Indicating Lamp Remains Illuminated

DEFINITION: The Battery Indicating Lamp remains illuminated after the engine has started. Generator or drive belt noise may have been heard while the engine was operating.

Visually inspect the engine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Diagnosis in Engine Mechanical -- 2.2L or Drive Belt Diagnosis in Engine Mechanical -- 4.3L.

Is the engine drive belt properly installed, in good condition, and properly tensioned?

Repair, adjust, or replace the engine drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Diagnosis in Engine Mechanical -- 2.2L or Drive Belt Diagnosis in Engine Mechanical -- 4.3L.

Are the repairs complete?

  1. Start the engine.
  2. Inspect the Generator for rotation.

Is the Generator rotating?

Stop the engine.

Is the engine a 2.2L Engine?

Replace the Generator. Refer to Generator Replacement .

  1. Connect a voltmeter between the Battery negative and positive terminals.
  2. Observe the indicated voltage while the engine is running.
  3. Remove the voltmeter.

Is the indicated voltage between 13 and 16 Volts?

13 V to 16 V

Stop the engine.

Is the engine a 2.2L Engine?

Replace the Generator. Refer to Generator Replacement .

  1. Place the Ignition Switch in the Off position.
  2. Disconnect the Generator.
  3. Disconnect the Instrument Cluster.

Does the test lamp light?

Locate and repair the short to ground on the BRN (25) wire between the Instrument Cluster and the Generator.

Are the repairs complete?

  1. Reconnect the Instrument Cluster.
  2. Disconnect In-Line Connector C203.
  3. Connect an ohmmeter between In-Line Connector C203 Cavity C for the BRN (25) wire to the Instrument Cluster and ground.

Is the resistance to ground less than 1.2 ohms?

1.2 ohms

  1. Replace the Generator. Refer to Generator Replacement .
  2. Reconnect the connector at the Generator.
  3. Reconnect In-Line Connector C203.

Are the repairs complete?

  2. Reconnect the connector at the Generator.
  3. Reconnect In-Line Connector C203.

  2. Reconnect the connector at the Generator.
