Oil Pan Replacement Rear Wheel Drive

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 31739  Size: SH
  1. Drain the engine oil.
  2. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .

  3. Remove the engine.
  4. Refer to Engine Replacement in Engine Mechanical 4.3L.

  5. Remove the oil pan.
  6. Refer to Oil Pan Removal .

  7. Clean and inspect all parts.
  8. Refer to Oil Pan Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 31739  Size: SH
  1. Install the oil pan.
  2. Refer to Oil Pan Installation .

  3. Install the engine.
  4. Refer to Engine Replacement in Engine Mechanical 4.3L.

  5. Fill the engine with oil.
  6. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .

Oil Pan Replacement Four Wheel Drive

Removal Procedure


    Object Number: 1027  Size: SH
  1. Remove the battery and the battery tray.
  2. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.


    Object Number: 6827  Size: SH
  3. Disconnect the shift cable at the actuator.
  4. Raise the vehicle.
  5. Remove the underbody shield from the steering linkage and the engine oil pan.
  6. Drain the engine oil.

  7. Object Number: 183406  Size: SH
  8. Remove the starter motor.
  9. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .

  10. Remove the oil cooler pipes.
  11. Remove both front wheels and tires.
  12. Disconnect the electrical connector at the shift cable housing.
  13. Remove the wiring harness bracket at the shift cable housing.

  14. Object Number: 6828  Size: SH
  15. Remove (3) shift cable housing bolts.
  16. Disconnect the shift cable from the differential carrier.

  17. Object Number: 142111  Size: SH
  18. Remove both drive axles.
  19. Refer to Driveline/Axle.


    Object Number: 6833  Size: SH
  20. Remove the differential.
  21. Refer to Driveline/Axle.


    Object Number: 31739  Size: SH
  22. Remove the following oil pan fasteners:
  23. • Remove ten oil pan bolts.
    • Remove two nuts at the crankshaft rear oil seal.
    • Remove two transmission to oil pan bolts.
  24. Remove the oil pan from the engine.
  25. Clean all sealing surfaces.
  26. Refer to Oil Pan Cleaning and Inspection .

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 31739  Size: SH
  1. Install the oil pan.
  2. Notice
    Any time the transmission and the engine oil pan are off of the engine at the same time, the transmission must be installed before the oil pan. This will allow for the proper measurement of the oil pan tolerance. Failure to achieve the correct clearance can result in premature transmission failure.

    Refer to Oil Pan Installation .

  3. Install the differential.
  4. Refer to Driveline/Axle.


    Object Number: 142111  Size: SH
  5. Install both drive axles.
  6. Refer to Drive/Axle.


    Object Number: 6828  Size: SH
  7. Connect the shift cable to the differential carrier.
  8. Install (3) shift cable housing bolts.
  9. Install the wiring harness bracket at the shift cable housing.
  10. Connect the electrical connector at the shift cable housing.
  11. Install both front wheels and tires.
  12. Install the oil cooler pipes.

  14. Install the starter motor.
  15. Refer to Starter Motor Replacement .


    Object Number: 6827  Size: SH
  16. Install the underbody shield to the steering linkage and the engine oil pan.
  17. Lower the vehicle.
  18. Connect the shift cable at the actuator.

  19. Object Number: 1027  Size: SH
  20. Install the battery and battery tray.
  21. Refer to Battery Replacement in Engine Electrical.

  22. Fill the engine with engine oil.
  23. Refer to Engine Oil and Oil Filter Replacement .
