Power Steering Pump Replacement 2.2L

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 25034-C Power Steering Pump Pulley Remover

  1. Remove the upper fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  2. Place a drain pan below the pump.

  3. Object Number: 288841  Size: SH
  4. Remove the power steering hoses from pump.
  5. Cap the power steering hoses.
  6. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical 2.2L.

  7. Object Number: 624  Size: SH
  8. Install J 25034-C to the power steering pump pulley.
  9. Ensure that the pilot bottoms in the pump shaft by turning the nut to the top of the pilot bolt.

  10. Hold the pilot bolt.
  11. Turn the nut clockwise.

  13. Remove the power steering pump pulley.

  14. Object Number: 395764  Size: SH
  15. Disconnect the A/C compressor electrical connection.

  16. Object Number: 281146  Size: SH
  17. Remove the A/C compressor mounting bolts.
  18. Remove the A/C compressor rear bracket mounting bolts.
  19. Remove the A/C compressor from brackets and set aside.

  20. Object Number: 379994  Size: SH
  21. Remove the power steering pump front mounting bolts.
  22. Remove the power steering pump rear mounting bracket nuts from the engine studs.
  23. Remove the power steering pump rear mounting bracket bolt.
  24. Remove the power steering pump.

Installation Procedure

Tools Required

    Object Number: 379994  Size: SH
  1. Install the power steering pump.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the front mounting bolts.
  4. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering pump front mounting bolts to 30 N·m (22 lb ft).

  5. Install the power steering pump rear mounting bracket bolt.
  6. Install the power steering pump rear mounting bracket nuts to the engine studs.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering pump rear mounting bracket bolt and nuts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  8. Install the A/C compressor to accessory bracket.
  9. Install the A/C compressor rear bracket mounting bolts.
  10. Tighten
    Tighten the A/C compressor rear bracket mounting bolts to 31 N·m (23 lb ft).

  11. Install the A/C compressor mounting bolts.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the A/C compressor mounting bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  13. Connect the A/C compressor electrical connection.

  14. Object Number: 288837  Size: SH
  15. Place the pulley on the end of the power steering pump shaft.

  16. Object Number: 9983  Size: SH
  17. Install the J 25033-C .
  18. Ensure that the pilot bolt bottoms in the shaft by turning the nut to the top of the pilot bolt.

  19. Hold the pilot bolt.
  20. Turn the nut counterclockwise.
  21. Install the power steering pump pulley.

  22. Object Number: 245012  Size: SH
  23. Install the pulley flush against the end of the power steering pump shaft, with an allowable variance of 0.25 mm (0.010 in).
  24. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical 2.2L.

  25. Object Number: 288841  Size: SH
  26. Install the power steering pump hoses.
  27. Install the upper fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  28. Fill the power steering system.
  29. Bleed the system.
  30. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .

  31. Inspect the hoses for clearance.

Power Steering Pump Replacement 4.3L

Removal Procedure

Tools Required

J 25034-C Power Steering Pump Pulley Remover

  1. Remove the upper fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical 4.3L.
  3. Remove the fan clutch from the water pump. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Engine Cooling.

  4. Object Number: 624  Size: SH
  5. Install J 25034-C to the power steering pump pulley.
  6. Ensure that the pilot bottoms in the pump shaft by turning the nut to the top of the pilot bolt.

  7. Hold the pilot bolt.
  8. Turn the nut clockwise.

  9. Object Number: 288840  Size: SH
  10. Remove the power steering pump pulley.
  11. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  12. Remove steering linkage shield. Refer to Steering Linkage Shield Replacement in Steering Linkage.
  13. Place a drain pan below the pump.
  14. Disconnect the power steering pressure hose from the power steering pump.
  15. Lower the vehicle.

  17. Disconnect the power steering return hose from the power steering pump.
  18. Cap the power steering pump hoses.

  19. Object Number: 288836  Size: SH
  20. Remove the filler neck tube.

  21. Object Number: 288833  Size: SH
  22. Remove the power steering rear bracket nut from the engine stud.
  23. Remove the power steering lower retaining nut from the engine stud.

  24. Object Number: 288829  Size: SH
  25. Remove the power steering pump front mounting bolts.
  26. Remove the power steering pump.

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the power steering pump.

    Tighten the power steering pump front mounting bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  5. Install the rear bracket nut to the engine stud.
  6. Install the power steering pump front mounting nut to engine stud.
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the power steering rear bracket nut and the power steering pump front mounting nut to 41 N·m (31 lb ft).

  8. Install the filler neck tube.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the neck tube bolt to 20 N·m (15 lb ft).

  10. Connect the power steering return hose to the power steering pump.
  11. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  12. Connect the power steering pressure hose to the power steering pump.
  13. Install steering linkage shield. Refer to Steering Linkage Shield Replacement in Steering Linkage.
  14. Lower the vehicle.

  16. Place the power steering pump pulley on the end of the power steering pump shaft.

  17. Object Number: 9983  Size: SH
  18. Install J 25033-C .
  19. Ensure that the pilot bolt bottoms in the shaft by turning the nut to the top of the pilot bolt.

  20. Hold the pilot bolt.
  21. Turn the nut counterclockwise.
  22. Install the power steering pump pulley.

  23. Object Number: 245012  Size: SH
  24. Install the pulley (1) flush against the end of the power steering pump shaft (2), with an allowable variance of 0.25 mm (0.010 in).
  25. Install the fan clutch to from the water pump. Refer to Fan Clutch Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  26. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical 4.3L.
  27. Install the upper fan shroud. Refer to Fan Shroud Replacement in Engine Cooling.
  28. Fill the power steering system.
  29. Bleed the system. Refer to Power Steering System Bleeding .
  30. Inspect the hoses for clearance.
