Removal Procedure

CAUTION: When you are performing service on or near the SRS components or the SRS wiring, you must disable the SRS system. Refer to Disabling the SRS System. Failure to follow the correct procedure could cause air bag deployment, personal injury, or unnecessary SRS system repairs.

  1. Disable the SRS system. Refer to Disabling the SRS in SRS.
  2. Notice: The wheels of the vehicle must be straight ahead and the steering column in the LOCK position before disconnecting the steering column or intermediate shaft from the steering gear. Failure to do so will cause the coil assembly in the steering column to become uncentered which will cause damage to the coil assembly.

  3. Turn the steering wheel so that the front wheels are pointing straight ahead.
  4. Turn the ignition switch to the LOCK position and remove the key.
  5. Important: Note the relationship of the upper intermediate shaft to the lower intermediate shaft and the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column in order to ensure proper installation.

  6. Remove the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .

  7. Object Number: 288798 Size: SH
  8. Remove the nut and the bolt that retain the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column.
  9. Remove the upper intermediate shaft from the steering column.

Installation Procedure

    Object Number: 288798 Size: SH
  1. Install the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column.
  2. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  3. Install the nut and bolt that retain the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column.
  4. Tighten
Tighten the upper intermediate shaft to the steering column nut to 47 N·m (35 lb ft).

  5. Install the steering column. Refer to Steering Column Replacement .
  6. Enable the SRS system. Refer to Enabling the SRS in SRS.
