Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and suitably support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the rear wheels. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  3. Remove the rear drums, if equipped. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement in Drum Brakes.
  4. Remove the rear rotors, if equipped. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  5. Remove the axle housing cover. Refer to Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement .

  7. Remove the pinion shaft lock bolt.

  8. Object Number: 9769  Size: SH
  9. Remove the pinion shaft.

  10. Object Number: 9774  Size: SH
  11. Remove the C-lock from the button end of the axle shaft. Push in the axle shaft toward the center of the vehicle.

  12. Object Number: 9770  Size: SH
  13. Remove the axle shaft from the axle housing. Mark the shaft as left or right.

Installation Procedure

  1. Lubricate the axle shaft wheel bearing surface and the oil seal surface using axle lubricant.

  2. Object Number: 9771  Size: SH

    Important: 

       • Use the correct axle on the axle's corresponding side.
       • Do not damage the oil seal.
       • The splined end of the axle shaft must engage the splines of the rear axle side gear.

  3. Install the axle shaft into the housing.

  5. Install the C-lock on the axle shaft. Pull the axle shaft outward so the C-lock seats in the counterbore of the rear axle side gear.

  6. Object Number: 9775  Size: SH
  7. Install the pinion shaft through the case and the pinion.
  8. Important: When reusing the differential pinion shaft locking screw, coat the threads with Loctite® 242 before reinstalling. This prevents the screw from loosening in the case.

  9. Align the hole in the pinion shaft with the lock bolt hole.

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  11. Install the new lock bolt.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the lock bolt to 36 N·m (27 lb ft).

  13. Install the new gasket on the axle housing cover. Refer to Rear Axle Housing Cover and Gasket Replacement .
  14. Add the axle lubricant to a level of 9.5 mm (3/8 in) from the top of the fill plug hole. Refer to Lubrication Specifications .
  15. Install the rear rotor, if equipped. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  16. Install the brake drums, if equipped. Refer to Brake Shoe Replacement in Drum Brakes.
  17. Install the tires. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  18. Inspect the rear axle operation.
