Did you perform the Instrument Cluster Diagnostic System Check?

Important: If the instrument cluster is completely inoperative, refer to Instrument Cluster Inoperative .

  1. Start the engine.
  2. Monitor the tachometer gauge on the instrument cluster.

Does the vehicle's tachometer indicate an engine RPM?

Go to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the in line connection C101.
  3. Turn the ignition ON.
  4. Test the tachometer signal circuit voltage from the C101 connector (female side of connector) to a good ground using the J 39200 DMM. Refer to Measuring Voltage in Wiring Systems.

Does the DMM display a voltage greater than the specified value?

9.5 V

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Remove the instrument cluster. Refer to Instrument Cluster Replacement .
  3. Test for continuity from the Tachometer signal circuit at the instrument cluster electrical connector to the in line connector C101. Refer to Testing for Continuity in Wiring Systems.

Does the DMM display continuity?

Test for continuity from the Tachometer signal circuit to a good ground. Refer to Testing for Continuity in Wiring Systems.

Test the instrument cluster harness connector for a poor connection to the instrument cluster. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections and Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

  1. Turn the ignition OFF.
  2. Disconnect the PCM/VCM connector which contains the tachometer signal circuit. Refer to Powertrain Control Module Replacement/Programming in Engine Controls-2.2L or Powertrain Control Module Replacement/Programming in Engine Controls-2.2L (L43) or VCM Replacement/Programming in Engine Controls-4.3L.
  3. Test the continuity of the tachometer signal circuit from the PCM/VCM harness connector to the in line connector C101 using a J 39200 DMM. Refer to Testing for Continuity in Wiring Systems.

Test the continuity of the tachometer signal circuit from the PCM/VCM harness connector to a good ground using a J 39200 DMM. Refer to Testing for Continuity in Wiring Systems.

Repair the open tachometer signal circuit from the instrument cluster connector to the in line connector C101. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the short to ground in the tachometer signal circuit from the instrument cluster connector to the in line connector C101. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the open in the tachometer signal circuit from the PCM/VCM harness connector to the in line connector C101. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Repair the short to ground in the tachometer signal circuit from the PCM/VCM harness connector to the in line connector C101. Refer to Wiring Repairs in Wiring Systems.

Test the PCM/VCM harness connector and the in line connector C101 harness connector for poor connections. Refer to Testing for Intermittent Conditions and Poor Connections in Wiring Systems.

Important: Program the replacement PCM/VCM. Refer to Powertrain Control Module Replacement/Programming in Engine Controls-2.2L or Powertrain Control Module Replacement/Programming in Engine Controls-2.2L (L43) or VCM Replacement/Programming in Engine Controls-4.3L.

Replace the PCM/VCM.
