SUBJECT: SERVICE MANUAL UPDATE - SECTION 5E2 - REVISED "INHIBITED OPERATION" LIST AND NEW CHART "D" FOR "ETS OFF" INDICATOR LAMP ON, NO DTC'S SET

MODELS: 1996 BUICK SKYLARK 1996 CHEVROLET CAVALIER 1996 OLDSMOBILE ACHIEVA 1996 PONTIAC GRAND AM, SUNFIRE

THIS BULLETIN REVISES THE LIST UNDER "INHIBITED OPERATION" AND ADDS A NEW CHART "D" FOR SECTION 5E2 OF THE APPROPRIATE SERVICE MANUAL AS FOLLOWS:

- THE FOLLOWING LIST SUPERSEDES THE LIST ON PAGE 5E2-8 OF THE SERVICE MANUAL:

INHIBITED OPERATION ===================

THERE ARE A NUMBER OF REASONS THAT THE ENHANCED TRACTION SYSTEM (ETS) WILL BE DISABLED:

O ETS OFF SWITCH IS IN THE "OFF" POSITION. O EBTCM SENSES A VALID BRAKE SWITCH INPUT. O PARK BRAKE IS ENGAGED. O ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE IS NOT WITHIN NORMAL OPERATING RANGE. O MANIFOLD AIR TEMPERATURE IS NOT WITHIN NORMAL OPERATING RANGE. O PCM SETS A DTC THAT TURNS ON THE "CHECK ENGINE" LAMP. O PCM SETS A TYPE "C" OR "D" FAILURE RECORD THAT DOES NOT TURN ON THE "CHECK ENGINE" LAMP. O EBTCM SETS A DTC 21, 22, 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 32, 33, 34 AND/OR 35 (ANY WHEEL SPEED SENSOR DTC).

- CHART D (SEE ATTACHED CHART) IS TO BE ADDED TO THE SYMPTOM TABLE WHICH STARTS ON PAGE 5E2-30 (J-CAR SERVICE MANUAL) AND 5E2-29 (N-CAR SERVICE MANUAL).

ETS OFF SWITCH OPERATION (PONTIAC AND OLDSMOBILE) =================================================

A SWITCH IS USED TO ALLOW THE OPERATOR TO TURN THE ETS "OFF" AND "ON". THE "ETS OFF" SWITCH IS LOCATED WITHIN THE GEAR SHIFTER FOR PONTIAC. THE OLDSMOBILE SWITCH IS LEFT OF THE STEERING COLUMN ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL.
