GM Service Manual Online
For 1990-2009 cars only

Notice: When adding fluid or making a complete fluid change, always use the proper power steering fluid. Failure to use the proper fluid will cause hose and seal damage and fluid leaks.

Use power steering fluid GM P/N 1050017 or equivalent. The power steering fluid level is indicated by marks on either of the following components:

    • A see-through fluid reservoir
    • A fluid level indicator on the fluid reservoir cap

Important: During cold weather, the power steering assist reduction is more noticeable in steering gear systems with longer hoses. This condition is related to the power steering fluid viscosity. Do not confuse this condition with other conditions having similar symptoms. In cold climates use one of the following low temperature service fluids:

   • GM P/N 12345866 (16 oz) or equivalent
   • GM P/N 12345867 (32 oz) or equivalent

If the power steering fluid is warm, about 77° C (170° F) or hot to the touch, ensure that the fluid level is at the full HOT mark.

If the power steering fluid is cool, about 21° C (70° F), ensure that the fluid level is at the full COLD mark.
