The Variable Effort Steering System (VES), incorporates its controller into the EBCM. If any of the steering wheel position sensor circuit wires should become open or shorted, a DTC C1243 will set.

A malfunction DTC is stored. No ABS indicator lamp is turned ON but VES is disabled. ABS remains functional. For diagnosis of DTC C1243, refer to DTC C1243 Variable Effort Steering Steering Wheel Sensor Circuit Malfunction in Variable Effort Steering.
