Removal Procedure
Tools Required
J 24420-C Crankshaft
Pulley/Hub Puller/Gear Puller
Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing
any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to
the vehicle or its components.
Notice: The inertial weight section of the balancer is assembled to the hub
with a rubber type material. The correct removal procedure must be followed
or movement of the inertial weight section of the hub will destroy the tuning
of the balancer.
- Disconnect the negative battery cable.
- Remove the drive belt. Refer to
Drive Belt Replacement
.
- Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to
Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle
in General Information.
- Remove the right front tire and wheel assembly.
- Remove the right splash shield. Refer to
Wheelhouse Splash Shield Replacement
in Body Front
End.
- Support the right side frame and loosen the right side frame bolts
in order to access the crankshaft balancer bolt. Refer to
Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement
in Front Suspension.
- Remove the balancer retaining
bolt. Have an assistant keep the flywheel from turning.
- Install the J 24420-C
on the balancer.
- Turn the puller screw.
- Remove the balancer.
Installation Procedure
Tools Required
J 29113 Crankshaft
Balancer Installer
Notice: The inertial weight section of the balancer is assembled to the hub
with a rubber type material. The correct removal procedure must be followed
or movement of the inertial weight section of the hub will destroy the tuning
of the balancer.
- Coat the front cover seal contact area with engine oil.
- Apply sealant to the crankshaft key. Apply sealant to the crankshaft
keyway. Use GM RTV sealant P/N 1052917 or the equivalent.
- Place the balancer into
position over the key in the crankshaft.
- Install the J 29113
onto the crankshaft.
- Pull the balancer into position.
- Remove the J 29113
from the balancer.
Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners
must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring
replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant
are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or
corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified.
These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage
the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when
installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.
- Install the balancer
retaining bolt. Have an assistant keep the flywheel from turning.
Tighten
Tighten the bolt to 103 N·m (76 lb ft).
- Tighten the right side frame bolts. Refer to
Front Suspension Crossmember Replacement
in Front Suspension.
- Install the right splash shield. Refer to
Wheelhouse Splash Shield Replacement
in Body Front
End.
- Install the right tire and wheel assembly. Refer to
Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation
in Tires
and Wheels.
- Lower the vehicle.
- Install the drive belt. Refer to
