Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement 3.4L

Removal Procedure

Important: When replacing a failed compressor it will be necessary to inspect the expansion orifice tube for material build up. Clean or replace as necessary. Refer to Expansion (Orifice) Tube Replacement .

  1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer Drive Belt Replacement Engine Mechanical - 3.4L.
  3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Remove the right front wheelhouse splash shield. Refer to Wheelhouse Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.

  5. Object Number: 588076  Size: SH
  6. Disconnect the electrical connection at the compressor.

  7. Object Number: 588082  Size: SH
  8. Remove the compressor/condenser hose from the compressor.
  9. Remove and discard the seal washers.

  10. Object Number: 588126  Size: SH
  11. Remove the three compressor attaching bolts.
  12. Remove the compressor and the spacer.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 588126  Size: SH

    Important: When servicing or replacing the compressor, drain and measure the oil from the compressor.

  1. Drain the compressor oil from the new compressor.
  2. Refill the compressor with the same amount of oil that was drained from the old compressor.
  3. If less than 60 ml (1 oz) was drained from the old compressor, add 60 ml (2 oz).

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the bolts and the spacer to the compressor.
  5. Install the bolts, the spacer, and the compressor to the engine.
  6. Tighten

    1. Tighten the front top bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the front rear bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
    3. Tighten the bottom bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  7. Install NEW seal washers to the compressor ports.
  8. Install the compressor/condenser hose and the bolt to the compressor.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the hose bolt to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  10. Connect the electrical connection to the compressor.
  11. Install the right front wheel house splash shield. Refer to Wheelhouse Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  12. Lower the vehicle.
  13. Install the drive belt. Refer Drive Belt Replacement Engine Mechanical - 3.4L..
  14. Recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .

Air Conditioning Compressor Replacement 2.4L

Removal Procedure

  1. Recover the refrigerant. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
  2. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 2.4L.
  3. Raise the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  4. Remove the right front wheelhouse splash shield. Refer to Wheelhouse Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  5. Disconnect the clutch electrical connector from the compressor.
  6. Remove the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve from the compressor mounting stud. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.4L.

  8. Remove the compressor hose assembly from the compressor.
  9. Remove and discard the sealing washers.

  10. Object Number: 588073  Size: SH
  11. Remove the two bolts that hold the compressor to the oil pan.
  12. Remove the two compressor to idler pulley bolts.
  13. Remove the compressor.

Installation Procedure

Important: When servicing or replacing the compressor, drain and measure the oil from the compressor.

  1. Drain and measure the oil in the compressor.
  2. Refill the compressor with the proper amount of oil. Refer to Refrigerant Oil Distribution .
  3. Install the compressor and loosely install the two compressor to idler pulley bracket bolts.
  4. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  5. Loosely install the two oil pan to compressor bolts.
  6. Tighten

    1. Tighten the compressor to idler pulley bracket bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).
    2. Tighten the compressor to oil pan bolts to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  7. Install NEW sealing washers on the compressor ports.
  8. Install the compressor hose assembly.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the hose bolt to 33 N·m (24 lb ft).

  10. Connect the compressor clutch electrical connector.
  11. Install the EVAP canister purge solenoid valve to the compressor mounting stud. Refer to Evaporative Emission Canister Purge Solenoid Valve Replacement in Engine Controls - 2.4L.
  12. Install the right front wheelhouse splash shield. Refer to Wheelhouse Splash Shield Replacement in Body Front End.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 2.4L.
  15. Evacuate and recharge the A/C system. Refer to Refrigerant Recovery and Recharging .
