Test brakes on a dry, clean, reasonably smooth and level roadway. A true test of brake performance cannot be made if the roadway is wet, greasy, or covered with loose dirt. Under these conditions, all the tires do not grip the road equally. Testing is adversely affected as indicated below:

    • When the roadway is crowned, the weight of the vehicle is thrown toward the wheels on one side.
    • When the roadway is too rough, the wheels will bounce

Test the brakes at different vehicle speeds with both light and heavy pedal pressure. Because of a high deceleration capability, a firmer pedal may be felt at higher deceleration rates.
