The replacement powertrain control module (PCM) must be reprogrammed and the crankshaft position system variation learn procedure must be performed. Refer to the following procedures:

See the Introduction in Powertrain Control Module Description for more information on using the diagnostic functions of the PCM.

Notice: In order to prevent internal damage to the PCM, the ignition must be OFF when disconnecting or reconnecting the PCM connector.

Service of the PCM should normally consist of either replacement of the PCM or EEPROM re-programming.

If the diagnostic procedures call for the PCM to be replaced, the PCM should be inspected first in order to verify the PCM is the correct part. DTC P0601 indicates the EEPROM programming has malfunctioned. When DTC P0601 is set, re-program the EEPROM.

Important: It is necessary to record the remaining engine oil life. If the replacement module is not programed with the remaining engine oil life, the engine oil life will default to 100%. If the replacement module is not programmed with the remaining engine oil life, the engine oil will need to be changed at 5000 km (3,000 mi) from the last engine oil change.

1. Using a scan tool, retrieve the percentage of remaining engine oil. Record the remaining engine oil life.

Caution: Unless directed otherwise, the ignition and start switch must be in the OFF or LOCK position, and all electrical loads must be OFF before servicing any electrical component. Disconnect the negative battery cable to prevent an electrical spark should a tool or equipment come in contact with an exposed electrical terminal. Failure to follow these precautions may result in personal injury and/or damage to the vehicle or its components.

2. Disconnect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.
3. Remove the left hush panel.



4. Loosen the PCM connector screws (1).




Notice: Do not touch the PCM connector pins or soldered components on the circuit board in order to prevent possible electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage. Do not remove the integrated circuit boards from the carrier.

5. Disconnect the PCM electrical connectors.
6. Remove the PCM retainer.
7. Slide the PCM from the PCM bracket.

Remove the new PCM from the packaging and inspect the service number to verify the number is the same number--or an updated number--as the faulty PCM.

1. Slide the PCM into the PCM bracket.
2. Install the PCM retainer.

Notice: Do not touch the PCM connector pins or soldered components on the circuit board in order to prevent possible electrostatic discharge (ESD) damage. Do not remove the integrated circuit boards from the carrier.




3. Install the PCM electrical connectors.



4. Tighten the PCM connector screws (1).
5. Install the left hush panel.
6. Connect the negative battery cable. Refer to Battery Negative Cable Disconnection and Connection in Engine Electrical.

Important: The replacement PCM must be reprogrammed and the crankshaft position system variation learn procedure must be performed.

The Password Learn Procedure must be performed so the Theft Deterrent System will allow the vehicle to run.
7. Program the PCM.
8. The replacement PCM will NOT allow Secondary AIR Pump operation until a total of 10 miles have accumulated.

1. Ensure that the following conditions have been met:

•	The battery is fully charged and a battery charger is disconnected.

•	The ignition is ON.

•	The Techline equipment cable connection at the DLC is secure.

2. Program the PCM using the latest software matching the vehicle. Refer to up-to-date Techline equipment users instructions.
3. If the PCM is being replaced perform the CKP System Variation Learn Procedure. Refer to Crankshaft Position System Variation Learn .
4. If the PCM fails to program, proceed as follows:

•	Ensure that all PCM connections are OK.

•	Inspect the Techline equipment for the latest software version.

•	Attempt to program the PCM. If the PCM still cannot be programmed properly, replace the PCM. You must program the replacement PCM.

1. Perform the Powertrain On Board Diagnostic (OBD) System Check
2. Start the engine and the engine run for one minute.
3. Use the scan tool in order to scan for the DTCs.
