Knuckle Replacement Drum Brakes

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise and support the vehicle. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  3. Object Number: 175765  Size: SH
  4. Scribe the strut (1) and knuckle (4). Refer to Strut and Knuckle Scribing in Front Suspension.
  5. Remove the stabilizer shaft link. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement .

  6. Object Number: 175777  Size: SH
  7. Remove the rear lateral links to knuckle nut (5), bolt (1) and washers (4).
  8. Remove the brake drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement in Drum Brakes.
  9. Disconnect the ABS electrical connector.
  10. Remove the rear wheel hub. Refer to Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement .
  11. Remove the backing plate. Refer to Rear Disc Brake Backing Plate Replacement in Drum Brakes.

  13. Remove the trailing arm bolt (2) from the knuckle (1).
  14. Remove the trailing arm (5) from the knuckle (1).

  16. Remove the rear strut nuts (3).
  17. Remove the rear strut to knuckle bolts (5).
  18. Remove the knuckle (4).

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 175765  Size: SH
  1. Install the knuckle (4).
  2. Install the rear strut to knuckle bolts (5) and nuts (3). Hand tighten the nuts (3).

  3. Object Number: 175777  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Connect the lateral links to the knuckle and snug nut (5).
  5. Tighten
    Tighten lateral links to knuckle nut to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).

  6. Connect the trailing arm (5) to the knuckle (1).
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 69 N·m (51 lb ft).

  8. Install the backing plate. Refer to Rear Disc Brake Backing Plate Replacement in Drum Brakes.
  9. Install the rear wheel hub. Refer to Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement .
  10. Connect the ABS electrical connector.
  11. Install the drum. Refer to Brake Drum Replacement in Drum Brakes.
  12. Tighten
    Tighten the strut to knuckle bolts (5) to 120 N·m (89 lb ft).

  13. Install the stabilizer shaft link. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement .
  14. Install the tire and wheel. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  15. Lower the vehicle.

Knuckle Replacement Disc Brakes

Removal Procedure

  1. Raise the vehicle on a hoist. Refer to Lifting and Jacking the Vehicle in General Information.
  2. Remove the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.

  3. Object Number: 175777  Size: SH
  4. Remove the following components:
  5. • The lateral links to knuckle nut (5)
    • The lateral links to knuckle bolt (1)
    • The lateral links to knuckle washer (4)
  6. Remove the brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  7. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever. Refer to Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement in Park Brake.
  8. Disconnect the wheel speed sensor harness.
  9. Remove the wheel hub assembly. Refer to Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement .

  11. Remove the following components:
  12. • The trailing arm (5) to knuckle bolt (2)
    • The trailing arm (5) to knuckle washer (2)
    • The trailing arm (5) to knuckle bushing (4)
  13. Remove the stabilizer shaft link bolt. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement .

  14. Object Number: 175765  Size: SH
  15. Remove the following components:
  16. • The strut to knuckle nuts (2)
    • The strut to knuckle bolts (5)
  17. Remove the knuckle (4).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install the knuckle (4) to the vehicle.

  2. Object Number: 175777  Size: SH

  5. Install the strut to knuckle nuts (3) and bolts (5). Hand tighten the nuts (3).
  6. Install the stabilizer shaft link. Refer to Stabilizer Shaft Link Replacement .

  7. Object Number: 175770  Size: SH
  8. Install the trailing arm (5) to knuckle bolt (2), washer (3), and bushing (4).
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the bolt to 69 N·m (51 lb ft).

  10. Install the wheel hub assembly. Refer to Rear Wheel Bearing and Hub Replacement .
  11. Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever. Refer to Parking Brake Rear Cable Replacement in Park Brake.
  12. Install the brake rotor. Refer to Rear Brake Rotor Replacement in Disc Brakes.
  13. Connect the wheel speed sensor harness.
  14. Tighten
    Tighten the strut-to-knuckle nuts (5) to 120 N·m (89 lb ft).

  15. Install the tire and wheel assembly. Refer to Tire and Wheel Removal and Installation in Tires and Wheels.
  16. Lower the vehicle.
