Water Pump Replacement LX5

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Loosen the water pump pulley bolts.
  3. Remove the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.5 L.

  5. Remove the drive belt idler pulley bolt.
  6. Remove the drive belt idler pulley.

  7. Object Number: 533395  Size: SH
  8. Remove the water pump pulley bolts.
  9. Remove the water pump pulley.

  10. Object Number: 293992  Size: SH
  11. Remove the long water pump bolts (1).

  12. Object Number: 293994  Size: SH
  13. Remove the short water pump bolts (1).

  14. Object Number: 533392  Size: SH
  15. Remove the water pump from the engine.
  16. Remove the water pump gasket.
  17. Clean and inspect the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Cleaning and Inspection in Engine Mechanical - 3.5 L Unit Repair.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 533392  Size: SH
  1. Install the new water pump gasket.
  2. Place the water pump in position on the front cover.

  3. Object Number: 607393  Size: SH

    Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. These coatings affect fastener torque and joint clamping force and may damage the fastener. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  4. Install the short water pump bolts.
  5. Tighten
    Tighten the short water pump bolts in the sequence shown to 14 N·m (124 lb in).

  6. Install the long water pump bolts (1).
  7. Tighten
    Tighten the long water pump bolts to 14 N·m (124 lb in).

  8. Install the water pump pulley.
  9. Install the water pump pulley bolts and hand tighten.

  10. Object Number: 533393  Size: SH
  11. Install the drive belt idler pulley.
  12. Install the drive belt idler pulley bolt.
  13. Tighten
    Tighten the drive belt idler pulley bolt to 50 N·m (37 lb ft).

  14. Install the drive belt. Refer to Drive Belt Replacement in Engine Mechanical - 3.5 L.
  15. Tighten the water pump pulley bolts.
  16. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump pulley bolts to 12 N·m (106 lb in).

  17. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .

Removal Procedure

  1. Drain the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
  2. Remove the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.0 L.
  3. Remove the secondary AIR injection control valve. Refer to Secondary Air Injection Control Valve Replacement - Bank 2 in Engine Controls - 4.0 L.
  4. Remove the oil level indicator tube nut.

  6. Remove the water pump belt cover.

  7. Object Number: 52983  Size: SH
  8. Remove the water pump drive belt (4).
  9. Disconnect the radiator outlet hose from the thermostat housing.

  10. Object Number: 69918  Size: SH
  11. Remove the water pump cover bolts.
  12. Remove the water pump cover.
  13. Disconnect the heater return hose.

  14. Object Number: 637030  Size: SH
  15. Position the J 38816-A to the water pump locking ears.
  16. Fasten the support plate to the water housing crossover, to ensure proper engagement of the tool to the water pump locking ears.
  17. Using the J 38816-A , turn the pump clockwise in order to remove the pump from the housing.
  18. Remove the support plate from the water housing crossover.

  20. Remove the water pump from the vehicle.
  21. Remove the seal from the water crossover.
  22. Clean the sealing surfaces of the water housing crossover and the pump cover.
  23. Clean and inspect the water pump. Refer to Water Pump Cleaning and Inspection in Engine Mechanical - 4.0 L Unit Repair.

Installation Procedure


    Object Number: 69917  Size: SH
  1. Insert the seal into the recessed portion of the water crossover.

  2. Object Number: 430127  Size: SH

    Important: The notched locking ear (1) must be in the 7 o'clock position.

  3. Index the water pumps locking ears with the tangs in the water crossover.

  4. Object Number: 637030  Size: SH
  5. Position the J 38816-A to the water pump locking ears.
  6. Fasten the support plate to the water housing crossover, to ensure proper engagement of the tool to the water pump locking ears.
  7. Notice: Use the correct fastener in the correct location. Replacement fasteners must be the correct part number for that application. Fasteners requiring replacement or fasteners requiring the use of thread locking compound or sealant are identified in the service procedure. Do not use paints, lubricants, or corrosion inhibitors on fasteners or fastener joint surfaces unless specified. Use the correct tightening sequence and specifications when installing fasteners in order to avoid damage to parts and systems.

  8. Turn the J 38816-A counterclockwise.
  9. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump to 100 N·m (74 lb ft).

  10. Remove the support plate from the water housing crossover.

  11. Object Number: 69918  Size: SH
  12. Connect the water pump cover to the heater return hose.
  13. Install the water pump cover to the water housing crossover.
  14. Install the water pump cover bolts.
  15. Tighten
    Tighten the water pump cover bolts to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  16. Connect the radiator outlet hose to the thermostat housing.

  17. Object Number: 52983  Size: SH
  18. Install the water pump drive belt (4).

  19. Object Number: 500271  Size: SH
  20. Install the water pump belt cover.
  21. Install the oil level indicator tube nut.
  22. Tighten
    Tighten the oil level indicator tube nut to 10 N·m (89 lb in).

  23. Install the secondary AIR injection control valve. Refer to Secondary Air Injection Control Valve Replacement - Bank 2 in Engine Controls - 4.0 L.
  24. Install the air cleaner assembly. Refer to Air Cleaner Assembly Replacement in Engine Controls - 4.0 L.
  25. Fill the cooling system. Refer to Cooling System Draining and Filling .
